Job Summary:
The Lead Staff General Ledger Accountant is responsible for overseeing the general ledger and helping ensure the Company’s financial records are accurate, complete, and prepared preparing, analyzing, and reviewing financial statements in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). This role serves as a subject matter expert, providing oversight of complex accounting functions, ensuring accuracy and compliance, and supporting strategic financial decision-making.
Key Responsibilities:
- General Ledger Accruals — Prepare, review, and post recurring and non-recurring accruals; ensure appropriate documentation and supporting schedules.
- Month End Close and Reconciliations — Lead month-end close tasks for assigned GL areas; prepare and reconcile balance sheet accounts; ensure close deadlines are met.
- Fixed Assets — Maintain fixed asset register; process additions, disposals, transfers, and depreciation; reconcile fixed asset subledger to the GL.
- Prepaids — Record and amortize prepaid expenses; reconcile prepaid schedules to the GL.
- Bank Reconciliations — Prepare and investigate monthly bank reconciliations; resolve reconciling items and liaise with treasury as needed.
- General Journal Entries — Draft, review, and post journal entries with appropriate approvals and supporting documentation.
- Variance Analysis — Perform monthly variance analysis between current and prior periods; explain significant movements and trends to management.
- Audit Coordination — Support internal and external audits by preparing documentation, responding to auditor inquiries, and implementing audit recommendations.
- Process Improvement and Controls — Identify opportunities to streamline close processes, strengthen controls, and improve accounting policies and procedures.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration — Work with FP&A, AP, AR, HR, Operations and other stakeholders to resolve accounting issues and support financial initiatives.
- Ad Hoc Reporting and Projects — Support special projects, system implementations, and month-end reporting enhancements.
- Prepare, analyze, and review financial statements, including balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow reports
- Maintain and oversee general ledger activity by compiling, analyzing, and verifying financial transactions
- Ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance of financial records with applicable regulations and accounting standards
- Lead and oversee accounting operations or complex segments of the accounting function
- Research and resolve complex accounting issues, providing recommendations and solutions
- Coordinate and collaborate with cross-functional teams to support financial reporting and business initiatives
- Develop and improve accounting processes, controls, and efficiencies
- Provide leadership, coaching, and mentorship to accounting staff
- May act as a lead or first-level supervisor, including reviewing work and guiding team performance
- Support audits by preparing documentation and responding to auditor inquiries
- Qualifications & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field
- Minimum of 6+ years of progressive accounting experience
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation preferred
- Experience working for a manufacturing company
- Expert knowledge of accounting principles, financial reporting, and compliance requirements
- Experience handling complex accounting issues with a high degree of independence and judgment
- Experience working for a public company and knowledge of SOX controls is a plus
