The Keene State College Upward Bound Programs are year-long college preparatory programs for first generation and/or low-income high school students from 12 target high schools in New Hampshire and Vermont. The summer session is designed to expose students to a college-like experience that supports the positive academic, emotional, and personal development of our students in preparation for success in high school, college, and beyond. The summer provides participants with the experiences of living on a college campus, taking academic courses, and engaging in co-curricular activities.
Lead TRIO Mentors are skills instructors who lead students in a variety of educational and cultural activities that stimulate growth. TRIO Mentors also provide guidance and support to all aspects of residence life, including facilities, rules, and maintaining a positive environment in which to live and work. Lead TRIO Mentors bridge communication between TRIO Mentor team and administrative staff.
Job Duties:
Academic Skill Development (25%)
Provide academic skill instruction (study skills, time management, LMS/technology use, organization).
Offer academic tutoring support during daily independent and group study sessions.
Conference regularly with teachers/academic departments to remain current in lessons/topics to support students’ academic success.
Provide learner feedback and document student progress.
Extended Learning (30%)
Create curriculum and lesson plans for daily extended learning opportunities:
educational electives for students to develop new interests, hobbies, or skills;
wellness initiatives to promote a healthy mind and body;
communication and collaboration curriculum to develop interpersonal and group work skills; and
residential education to inform community living expectations and standards.
Provide feedback on student progress.
Construct and submit evaluations for each student.
Mentoring (35%)
Serve as a role model for and ensure the safety of low-income, first-generation students in college-preparatory activities on- and off- campus
Monitor program-wide compliance with KSC and UBP guidelines.
Maintain a positive and supportive community environment.
Respond positively and proactively to student and staff issues as they arise, and report in a timely manner.
Leadership (5%)
Clearly communicate TRIO Mentor team needs with program administrators in a timely manner.
Other (5%)
Attend and contribute to all trainings and staff meetings.
Complete other programmatic duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Minimum Acceptable Education & Experience :
Current enrollment in a college degree program with a minimum of 75 credits at the college level completed at time of employment, or recent completion of a degree
Enthusiasm, integrity, leadership, and self-responsibility
Ability to establish strong rapport with students and colleagues, and work collaboratively with a multi-faceted team
Interest in working with adolescents
Sensitivity to the needs of the disadvantaged, and commitment to the goals of the Upward Bound Programs

Preferred Qualifications :
Supervisory work experience
Experience in residential life
First Aid/CPR certification
Experience as a student in a TRIO program
