Job Description

Caring Unlimited works with the community to end domestic violence in York County. We offer a comprehensive array of direct support programs to anyone impacted by domestic violence and work with the community to change the conditions that allow abuse to persist. Caring Unlimited is committed to being an accessible, culturally responsive, and trauma informed organization.

As part of a supportive, professional, and dedicated team, the Legal Advocate provides direct support with safety planning, emotional support, information and referral to people experiencing domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking. The advocate provides lay court advocacy to victims seeking assistance with protection from abuse, pro se divorce, parental rights and responsibilities, and other matters not requiring the services of a licensed attorney. The Advocate works closely with on-staff attorneys and other Caring Unlimited program staff to increase safety and access to resources for people seeking services. Caring Unlimited provides 3 weeks paid vacation, 12 paid holidays and comprehensive benefits to full time employees. Caring Unlimited pays 93% of health insurance premiums for staff and their dependent children.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Processes initial client intakes, assists in the creation of personalized safety plans, makes referrals to both internal and external resources needed to establish safety and well-being; provides on-going emotional support through court processes; answers questions about forms and procedures and provides assistance in completing them; and provides court accompaniment to court proceedings as necessary.
  • Assists in matters that do not require a license to practice law, e.g., such as filing to obtain temporary orders of protection.
  • Assists attorneys with scheduling and recordkeeping, and other court-related paperwork and conducts conflict checks as appropriate.
  • Facilitate support groups for survivors.
  • Provide information, referrals, and linkages to other services as appropriate for individuals.
  • Create and maintain effective relationships with community partners and participate in coordinating community response activities.
  • Facilitate community support group meetings.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation, records, and service statistics.
  • Participate regularly in 24-hour helpline coverage and backup as assigned.

Job Requirements

The following experience and skills are considered essential:

  • Knowledge of and sensitivity to issues of domestic violence, sexual assault, and/or stalking.
  • Prior experience and demonstrated skills in crisis intervention, peer support/counseling, group facilitation, and conflict resolution preferred.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills. Detail oriented
  • Ability to create and sustain respectful relationships with a diverse group of staff, volunteers, clients, and community stakeholders.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office products and able to learn database software
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation

Education Requirements: The following education requirements are considered essential:

  • Associate’s Degree or higher in related field or equivalent experience required.
  • Willingness to acquire knowledge of and understanding of issues of domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking.
  • Successful completion of required advocacy training upon hire.
