About the Role:
This is an entry-level position within a Legal Aid immigration and asylum practice. The role is designed for an individual at the beginning of their immigration law career who is seeking to develop specialist expertise in asylum and protection-based work.
The successful candidate must pass the Law Society IAAS Trainee Caseworker examination or already hold IAAS Trainee Caseworker accreditation.
The post holder will assist in the preparation and progression of asylum and related human rights matters under supervision, in full compliance with IAAS standards, SRA requirements, and Legal Aid Agency (LAA) regulations.
Key Responsibilities
Asylum & Protection Casework Support
Assisting in the preparation of:
- Asylum applications and fresh claims
- Humanitarian protection claims
- Article 3 and Article 8 ECHR representations (where linked to protection matters)
Drafting:
- Client witness statements under supervision
- Basic legal representations
- Chronologies and screening interview summaries
- Reviewing Home Office refusal letters and identifying key issues
- Taking detailed and accurate attendance notes
Legal Aid Compliance
- Preparing Legal Help and CLR documentation
- Maintaining accurate time recording in line with Legal Aid Agency requirements
- Ensuring files comply with LAA audit standards
- Supporting preparation of billing schedules and disbursement records
Client Care
- Taking instructions from clients, including those affected by trauma, under supervision
- Working with interpreters appropriately and professionally
- Maintaining confidentiality and compliance with GDPR
- Ensuring safeguarding concerns are identified and escalated
Essential
- Law degree (or equivalent) or working towards qualification
- Demonstrable interest in asylum and human rights law
- Understanding of the asylum process
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work sensitively with vulnerable clients
- Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to manage deadlines in a fast-paced environment
Desirable
- Experience working or volunteering in immigration/asylum law
- Knowledge of IAAS standards
- Familiarity with Legal Aid Agency procedures
Development & Supervision
- Close supervision by an IAAS Senior Caseworker or Supervising Solicitor
- Structured training in asylum law and Legal Aid practice
- Support towards IAAS accreditation (subject to performance and eligibility)
- Can travel to our Batley, West Yorkshire office
Job Types: Part-time, Full-time
Pay: Up to $22,000.00 per year
