Job Description
SBBL Law is a mid-sized law firm in Grand Rapids, Michigan. We are looking to hire an experienced legal assistant. Position available immediately. SBBL Law is a dynamic, growing criminal defense firm located in a beautifully, renovated historic building in the heart of downtown. The firm consists of 12 attorneys (and growing) and seven non-lawyer staff members. We represent people under investigation and people who have been charged in criminal cases throughout Michigan, as well as in federal courts nationwide. We pride ourselves on our empathy, responsiveness, friendly attitude, ability to jump in quickly and help, and outstanding level of professional service.
Applicants are required to have at least 3 years of administrative experience working in a fast-paced environment (i.e. law firm, medical office, sales, etc.).
This is a full-time position, working primarily in the downtown Grand Rapids office. Competitive pay, benefits, and parking provided.
Job duties:
- Greeting clients/customer service
- Answering phones — handling incoming and outgoing calls with clients, courts, prosecutors, etc.
- Maintaining case files (digital and paper)
- Calendaring and monitoring deadlines, meetings, and court appearances for attorneys
- Opening mail
- Copying/putting together evidence binders
- Providing administrative support to attorneys and other staff with daily tasks and duties; enhance office effectiveness
- Type up and file basic legal documents and correspondence
- Filing motions
The ideal candidate should:
- Be proactive: anticipate next steps in a case and follow up on tasks without being reminded.
- Be empathic: interact with clients and members of the public seeking legal advice using empathetic communication and a desire to understand their situation.
- Have the ability to multi-task: keep multiple assignments organized at the same time and deal with interruptions in the form of incoming calls/new requests.
- Be organized: put things where they belong and get things to the right place (including electronic files).
- Write professionally: compose emails and written correspondence on behalf of attorneys with minimal oversight.
- Must be proficient in Microsoft Word, Gmail, and basic computer skills
