Overview:
As a Legal Assistant supporting a busy family law practice, you will be an integral part of the legal team, providing essential administrative support. Your role will involve close collaboration with clients, other law firms, and various court registries.
Attention to detail, empathy, and a willingness to learn family law procedures are key to success in this position.
Key Responsibilities:
Client Interaction:
- Act as the primary point of contact for clients, demonstrating empathy and professionalism.
- Assist clients in completing necessary forms and documentation.
Document Preparation:
- Drafting basic legal documents, including initiating pleadings such as applications, first drafts of affidavits and financial statements, court orders using clerk and counsel notes, etc, under the supervision of a lawyer.
Case Management:
- Maintain organized case files and ensure all relevant documents are up-to-date.
- Organizing and filing documents in electronic folders using existing naming conventions and procedures (we operate a paperless practice).
Calendar Management:
- Manage the lawyer’s calendar, scheduling client meetings, court appearances, and deadlines.
Court Filings:
- Prepare, review, and file legal documents with the Provincial and Supreme Cou
- Monitor and track the status of court filings and deadlines.
Administrative Support:
- Handle routine administrative tasks such as answering phones and managing emails.
- Prepare and submit lawyer's expenses and maintain billing records.
Qualifications:
- Previous experience in family law or litigation is an asset, although training will be provided, so prior experience is not necessary, as long as you are coachable and willing to learn.
- Willingness to learn family law court procedures and a strong interest in litigation.
- Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Fluency in English is a must.
- Empathy and the ability to handle emotionally charged situations with sensitivity.
- Someone who is tech-savvy.
- Advanced proficiency using Microsoft Office, including SharePoint, and Adobe.
Additional Information:
- This is a remote full-time position (20 to 35 hours per week) where you will have the opportunity to work from home.
- Please note that it generally takes a person roughly 12 to 18 months to achieve a basic level of proficiency as a legal assistant. Therefore, if you have no experience, then a strong willingness to learn is key.
