Legal Assistant

Job Description

Performs responsible secretarial and clerical work to support the operations of the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office. Provides administrative assistance to the Commonwealth’s Attorneys and Paralegals and performs related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Office Manager or designee.
The hiring range for this positon $23.15/hout to $31.84/hour based on experience.
The full salary range for this position is $23.15/hour to $40.52/hour to provide opportunity for growth and development.


Examples of Duties

  • Performs general legal clerical and secretarial duties.
  • Coordinates the delivery and pickup of daily mail, faxes, legal documents, and correspondence.
  • Maintains and updates attorney and court calendars, including scheduling of criminal cases, trials, and related events.
  • Review, research, and prepare the monthly jury list.
  • Assists with case file maintenance, including file cleanup and processing of closed cases.
  • Coordinates and prepares meeting areas for victim and witness interviews.
  • Maintains and updates office inventory; processes supply orders as needed.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of legal office practices, procedures and techniques;
  • Thorough knowledge of legal terminology and spelling;
  • Thorough knowledge of departmental functions, organization and policies;
  • General knowledge of the principles, methods and practices used in legal research;
  • Some knowledge of municipal law;
  • Ability to maintain involved office and legal records;
  • Ability to organize and perform work independently;
  • Ability to transcribe minutes and type at a minimum of 60 words per minute (wpm);
  • Ability to work effectively with a team;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with County officials, supervisors, employees, outside government agencies, and the general public.

Education and Experience

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and three (3) to five (5) years of administrative or secretarial experience as a legal secretary or assistant.
