Legal Assistant Position – Fremont Criminal Defense Law Firm

SBBL Law is a mid-sized law firm with offices in Fremont and Grand Rapids, Michigan. SBBL is hiring a legal assistant in its Fremont office. The position available immediately. The Fremont office is staffed by a partner and chief appellate counsel, in addition to the legal assistant (to be filled by this position). The attorneys travel often and work remotely frequently, but the legal assistant will be required to work in the office full-time to support the attorneys and the legal assistant's other responsibilities, which includes communicating with prospective clients, clients, courts and prosecutors' offices, calendaring appointments and court dates, handling incoming communications and mail, filing pleadings and maintaining client files. The ideal candidate for this role is a smart, detail-oriented person, who is conscientious, hardworking, compassionate and able to manage stress in a healthy, professional way. SBBL will provide appropriate training and support, in addition to providing support from the rest of SBBL's administrative staff.

SBBL Law is a dynamic, growing criminal defense firm. The firm consists of 11 attorneys (and growing) and 7 non-lawyer staff members. We represent people under investigation and people who have been charged in criminal cases throughout Michigan, as well as in federal courts nationwide. Applicants must have prior office administrative experience (legal office or court experience preferred). In lieu of legal office experience, we may consider an educational background in pre-law, English, communications, or other relevant fields.

This job is in-person in the downtown Fremont office from 8:00am-5:00pm, five days/week. The position offers competitive pay and benefits.

Job duties:

  • Greeting clients/customer service
  • Answering phones — handling incoming and outgoing calls with clients, courts, prosecutors, etc.
  • Maintaining case files (digital and paper)
  • Calendaring deadlines, meetings, and court appearances for attorneys
  • Opening mail
  • Copying/putting together evidence binders
  • Assisting attorneys and other staff with daily tasks and duties
  • Filing documents with the court

Required skills:

  • Proactivity: anticipate next steps in a case and follow up on tasks without being reminded
  • Empathy: interact with clients and members of the public seeking legal advice using empathetic communication and a desire to understand their situation
  • Multi-tasking: keep multiple assignments organized at the same time and deal with interruptions in the form of incoming calls/new requests
  • Organization: put things where they belong and get things to the right place (including electronic files)
  • Professionalism in writing: compose emails and written correspondence on behalf of attorneys with minimal oversight
  • Technical skills: must be proficient in Microsoft Word, Gmail, and basic computer skills
