About the Job

The Legal Support Services Manager Attorney (LSM) is responsible for the performance, development, and operational consistency of the firm’s legal support team. This role ensures that legal services are delivered efficiently, consistently, and at a high level across all teams, while directly supporting attorneys in managing workload, delegation, and case progression. The LSM operates as both a subject matter expert and people manager, bridging the gap between attorneys, support staff, and firm leadership.

You'll be responsible for:

  • Team Leadership & Performance Management: Directly manage paralegals, legal assistants, file clerks, and runners across offices. Conduct regular 1:1s, performance reviews, and coaching. Monitor productivity, quality, utilization, and identify underperformance early with clear improvement plans.
  • Attorney Support & Workload Management: Allocate and manage support staff across teams based on caseload, deadlines, and attorney needs. Oversee overflow work, coverage for vacations/LOAs, and transitions between team members to ensure continuity of service.
  • Training & Professional Development: Develop and maintain training programs, onboarding materials, and level banding for legal support staff. Provide ongoing coaching to strengthen substantive skills, systems knowledge, and billing practices
  • Standardization & Process Improvement: Establish and enforce firmwide standards for legal support work. Build and refine workflows, templates, and best practices while identifying opportunities to improve efficiency across systems and teams.
  • Quality Control & Client Experience: Ensure consistent, high-quality work product that aligns with firm standards and delivers clear client value. Partner with attorneys to reduce rework, improve communication, and enhance overall client experience.
  • Timekeeping, Billing & Accountability: Oversee timekeeping and billing practiced for support staff, ensure accurate, value-based entries and strong charged percentages. Monitor KPIs and partner with attorneys to improve delegation and efficiency.
  • Teamwork & Flexibility: At our firm, we prioritize teamwork and flexibility. While each role has defined duties, we expect all employees to step up and contribute across different areas when necessary to meet the evolving needs of the firm.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an ABA accredited law school.
  • Active license to practice law in California.
  • Minimum 5 years of family law experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate family law matters and communicate legal issues clearly to attorneys and support staff.
  • Proven track record of supervisory or team leadership experience.
  • Strong understanding of legal support services and legal ethics.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to explain complex legal issues in plain language.
  • Excellent organizational and multitasking abilities.
  • Empathy and discretion in handling high-emotion situations.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and case management software (Clio preferred).
  • Experience in a fast-paced or growing environment, with the ability to adapt to changing business needs.

Compensation

The anticipated base salary range for this role is: $115,000 - $130,000, but ultimately will depend on experience.
