Harford County Public Library offers a competitive compensation and benefits package. Starting range, depending on candidate qualifications, is between $54,795 - $67,910. This position is eligible for the following benefits: deferred compensation 457(b) retirement plan, pension plan, medical, dental and vision plans, employee assistance program, voluntary benefits, paid time off and more.
Position Summary:
The Librarian performs professional librarian services including reference services, reader’s advisory, computer support, technical instruction, location of materials, and general customer service. Performs basic supervisory responsibilities for hourly staff. Plans and presents programming. Meets minimum public service hours as defined by Library Administration.
Essential Duties:
1. Performs services within a branch, including but not limited to:
a. Assessing, evaluating, and weeding assigned collections;
b. Reviewing, selecting, and ordering materials in print and non-print formats;
c. Analyzing and interpreting statistical and community information as part of the selection process;
d. Managing assigned selection budgets by following established finance procedures;
e. Interpreting censorship and freedom of access issues as pertains to selection of materials for library customers;
f. Keeping abreast of publishing trends for materials;
g. Writing and compiling bibliographies and booklists;
h. Preparing and compiling required reports and statistics;
i. Mentoring professional and paraprofessional staff, as assigned.
2. Assists the public in the use of library resources, including computer catalogs, indexes, computerized search systems, and the Internet:
a. Performs in-depth reference searches and performing readers’ advisory services;
b. Plans, assembles, and arranges displays of materials to support popular topics;
c. Conducts library tours and orientations;
d. Provides information on library activities, facilities, rules, and services to customers;
e. Plans and executes programs for children, teens, and adults; coordinates special programs such as summer readings, story times, or holiday programs;
f. Moderates a book club.
3. Develops training tools and conducts staff training;
a. Plans, directs, or carries out special projects involving library promotion and outreach activities;
b. Improves library leadership skills through attending special workshops, classes, discussion groups, etc.
c. Performs reference and materials management activities in all service areas (A, J, YA) on a limited basis, as well as circulation activities;
d. May supervise hourly staff.
