Librarian/ ( ALMA Implementation Specialist)

Job Summary
We are seeking a dynamic and detail-oriented Librarian / ALMA Implementation Specialist to lead the integration and management of our library systems, with a focus on the Alma library services platform. This role combines expertise in collection management, cataloging, and data organization with project management skills to ensure seamless implementation of ALMA, an innovative library services platform. The successful candidate will enhance our library operations by optimizing resource access, improving metadata standards, and supporting digital initiatives. The Head Cataloger Librarian provides senior-level cataloging and library systems expertise to support the implementation and optimization of the Ex Libris ALMA/Primo Integrated Library System at the National Defense University Libraries. The role supports physical, digital, and special collections and performs work at the original cataloging and authority control level.
Key Responsibilities:

Lead and support cataloging activities during and after migration to Ex Libris ALMA/Primo.
Perform original and complex cataloging using MARC 21, RDA, and OCLC standards.
Conduct metadata cleanup, normalization, and authority control for physical and digital collections.
Support configuration, maintenance, and quality control of the ILS and discovery systems.
Maintain accurate bibliographic and authority records to ensure high-quality discovery and access.
Provide monthly status reports and coordinate with government library staff.

Duties

  • Lead the implementation and configuration of the ALMA library services platform, ensuring alignment with institutional goals and workflows
  • Manage collection development processes, including acquisition, cataloging, classification, and metadata creation to improve resource discoverability
  • Oversee data management tasks such as database maintenance, archival processing, digitization projects, and resource description using Resource Description & Access (RDA) standards
  • Develop and maintain integrated library systems (ILS), databases, and digital repositories to support efficient library operations
  • Collaborate with teams on grant proposal writing related to digital projects, archives management, and resource enhancement initiatives
  • Provide training and ongoing support for staff and users on library services, cataloging standards, and ALMA functionalities
  • Enhance user experience through customer service excellence, social media management for outreach, and effective communication of library resources and policies

Requirements

Required Qualifications:

Master’s Degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited program.
Minimum five (5) years of professional cataloging experience, preferably in academic or special libraries.
Demonstrated experience with ILS migration or implementation (Ex Libris ALMA preferred).
Advanced knowledge of metadata standards and authority control.
Ability to work on site and meet federal security requirements.

  • Proven experience with collection management, cataloging standards (such as MARC or Dublin Core), and archives management
  • Strong knowledge of integrated library systems (ILS), databases, metadata schemas, and digital resource platforms
  • Experience in project management, including planning, execution, and evaluation of system implementations or digital initiatives
  • Excellent communication skills for training staff, collaborating across departments, and engaging with external partners
  • Demonstrated organizational skills to handle multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining attention to detail
  • Familiarity with intellectual property law as it relates to digital content and resource sharing
  • Ability to adapt quickly to new technologies such as digitization tools and social media platforms for outreach purposes
  • Knowledge of archival standards like ISAD(G) or EAD is a plus

Pay: $67,929.60 - $81,807.70 per year
