Librarian, Outreach Services

ABOUT

The Outreach Services Librarian plays a pivotal role in ensuring equitable access to library services for diverse community college student populations. This position focuses primarily on outreach, instruction, and library programming, developing and implementing inclusive initiatives that connect students, faculty, staff, and the community with library resources and services across both online and in-person platforms. In addition, this position provides limited support for public service operations, including scheduled or as-needed assistance at the circulation and service desks, as part of a collaborative Learning Commons team.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

Primary Responsibilities
Outreach, Instruction, and Programming
  • Evaluate the information literacy requirements of TJC stakeholders, tailoring resources to align with programmatic and research needs while ensuring seamless access for all patrons.
  • Design, coordinate, and deliver engaging library programs, events, and workshops that support student success, information literacy, retention, and campus engagement.
  • Plan and implement outreach and programming initiatives with Student Life, academic departments, student organizations, and community partners.
  • Work with various College stakeholders to evaluate, recommend, and implement appropriate emerging technologies, digital content, applications, and databases that facilitate teaching, learning, and research.
  • Maintain the Library’s online presence (webpage and social media) through a focus on relevant, accurate, up-to-date, dynamic, and user-centered information to facilitate successful research and learning experience and further the strategic priorities of the College.
  • Manage the overall digital strategy and schedule for communicating with students, faculty, staff, and community members through social media platforms.
  • Create compelling graphics, stories, displays, and other marketing materials to enhance and promote services both online and in the library building while adhering to institutional branding standards.
  • Assess outreach and library programming effectiveness using attendance data, feedback, and outcomes to support continuous improvement.
  • Serve as the subject specialist to faculty in the School of Engineering, Mathematics, and Sciences, by collaborating with colleagues to evaluate and deselect outdated or irrelevant materials for assigned schools, identifying needed resources to support programmatic needs, and working with faculty to integrate information literacy and research skills into the curriculum.

Secondary Responsibilities
Public Service and Circulation Support
  • Provide scheduled or as-needed assistance at the circulation and service desks.
  • Assist patrons with checkouts, renewals, holds, and basic informational or directional questions.
  • Support study rooms, equipment checkout, printers, scanners, and other public-use technologies
  • Assist with opening and closing procedures of the Learning Commons as assigned
  • Maintain a primary focus on outreach, instruction, and programming while supporting daily operations
  • Oversee virtual engagement programs such as Library Reference Chat (IM), Ask-A-Librarian (email), and other similar tools;
  • Work to further enhance the library’s priority and reputation for providing outstanding customer service within a welcoming, friendly, and collegial environment;
  • Participate fully in professional development, planning, and assessment activities for the Learning Commons.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
No direct supervision

Work Environment:
Primarily indoor settings, with occasional (10%) work outside (events). May include work outside normal business hours, nights, weekends, and holidays to support outreach, programming, and public service operations.
Physical Demands: Sitting, walking, standing, lifting up to 20 pounds, pushing up to 50 pounds, and repetitive typing.
Travel Required: Yes – 20% - to off-sight locations (TJC West, TJC North, Rusk, and Jacksonville locations)
If travel is required, the candidate must have and maintain a current, valid Texas driver’s license and an acceptable driving record.

WHO YOU ARE

Required Education

Master’s degree in Library Science, Information Science, or another master’s degree in a discipline requiring advanced research, information evaluation, scholarly writing, and instructional engagement.

Required Experience
One year of experience in presenting, public speaking, program development, program research, or a related field.

Preferred Experience
Six months of library experience
