Librarian - Teen & Youth (Part Time)

Job Description

Serving primarily in the Youth and Teen Services Department of the Royal Oak Public Library, the Part-Time Youth & Teen Librarian serves at the public reference information desk, participates in youth and teen programming and assists with the preparation of tools to guide users to Library resources or promote aspects of Library services and collections. The part-time Librarian will also serve at the adult reference desk when scheduling needs arise.

Schedule: 27 hours per week. Evenings and weekends may be needed

Essential Job Functions

A Part-Time Youth & Teen Librarian for the youth and teen services department may be called upon to do any and all of the following: (These examples do not include all of the tasks which the employee may be expected to perform)


  • Provide reference and readers’ advisory services, both in person, by email, and on the phone
  • Offer instruction in the use of library systems and resources.
  • Develop and present programs for youth and teens, including story time
  • Assist in the use of internet and computer applications, both on PCs and Apple devices
  • Participate in collection development and compile collection statistic reports to be used in evaluation and weeding
  • Prepare library displays and bibliographies
  • Pick up toys in play area; straighten books on shelves
  • Feed the fish during opening shifts
  • Enter daily statistics during closing shifts
  • Assist with web content updates
  • Other tasks as assigned by a Department Head

KSA

A Part-Time Youth & Teen Librarian, upon application, shall have the following training and experience:
Required:


  • Master’s Degree in Library Science or equivalent from ALA Accredited School or the ability to earn the degree in the next 6 months.
Preferred:
  • Two years professional public library experience
  • Working knowledge of CARL library information systems

Qualifications for Employment
  • Strong knowledge of literature and reader’s interest levels.
  • Working knowledge of current library trends.
  • Demonstratable team spirit.
  • Ability to establish and maintain a professional and respectful working relationship with staff and patrons.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, as well as verbal and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of current library technology and MS Office products.
  • Ability to reach, bend, stretch and stand for long periods.
  • Flexible schedule
