We're looking for a Youth Services Librarian to inspire young minds.Application Filing deadline: March 23, 2026DefinitionThis is a professional position within the Library Department, performing duties under general supervision that ensure library users are provided with exceptional programs, services and experiences. Duties may be focused within a specialized area of library services, such as Children’s Services, Adult Services, Digital Services, Archives and Local History, and Support Services.Distinguishing CharacteristicsPerforms professional duties including reference and instruction, collection development and management, event and program planning, community outreach, tracking and compiling statistics, and utilizing and managing library technology and digital resources; participates in strategic planning and department goal setting and contributes to developing processes and procedures; enforces customer rules of behavior, and may train and provide direction to subordinate staff, interns and volunteers; may serve as a liaison from the library to community organizations and groups.Areas of Focus - Key Characteristics Children’s Services – Youth programming, development of children’s and teen collections, reference and readers’ advisory, outreach to, and develop partnerships with, schools and youth-serving community organizations, and organizing and overseeing youth volunteer programs.Digital Services - Identify and provide for the community’s technology needs (equipment, services, resources, education/instruction), promote library digital services, manage digital resource vendors, maintain and implement public-facing technologies, evaluate the potential of new technology to further the library‘s strategic goals; develop training materials and guidelines.Local History - Maintenance, preservation, organization and development of Local History Collection and archival materials, provide specialized local history reference services, promote Local History Collection, increase public access to the collection through digitization, cataloging and community outreach and partnerships. Support Services - Manage and implement technologies that are fundamental to library services, including Integrated Library System (acquisitions, cataloging, circulation, information retrieval, public user interfaces) and document management system and equipment, utilize analytics and statistics and create reports to assist staff in decision making about programs, services and operations, manage technology vendors.

Examples of DutiesProvide in-person reference services in-person, and by phone and email.Perform Reader’s Advisory for a wide variety of patrons and connect people to resources that meet their educational, recreational and information needs.Assist students with homework assignments and coordinate with teachers.Educate patrons on how to access and use library resources.Plan, coordinate, and conduct a wide variety of library programs for various ages and general and target audiences and coordinate speakers and third-party vendors for library events.Perform outreach activities for the library's services, programs, and projects by representing the library at community events, giving presentations to groups and organizations, and visiting schools and classrooms. Produce publicity materials that promote and increase public awareness of library services. Develop the library's materials and digital resources collections; select and weed material consistent with the library’s collection development and maintenance policy.Perform routine library walk-throughs to ensure compliance with the library’s rules of behavior, and to address, resolve, and document incidents and complaints; may be delegated to issue suspension letters. Draft processes and procedures and create documentation.Write detailed and descriptive incident and project reports.Train and provide direction to subordinate staff, interns and volunteers.Performs other related duties as assigned.
