Primary Purpose

Serve as the primary library professional on an assigned campus, providing day-to-day instructional support, collection maintenance, and student services. The Campus Library Aide independently manages the campus library during school hours, functioning as the on-site librarian and serving students, teachers, and staff with minimal direct supervision. The Campus Library Aide collaborates with the district's certified librarian on collection development and administrative matters.

Note: Because this position serves as the sole library professional at the campus level during school hours, the Campus Library Aide exercises independent professional judgment in all matters related to library program delivery, student instruction, and campus library administration.

Qualifications

Education / Certification

  • High school diploma or GED required

Special Knowledge / Skills

  • Proficient keyboarding, file maintenance, and basic computer skills
  • Ability to independently operate and troubleshoot the media center automated circulation system (Follett Destiny)
  • Familiarity with the district cataloging system and the ability to organize and maintain a campus library collection
  • Experience with Accelerated Reader (AR), Star assessments, and related literacy platforms
  • Experience with research databases.
  • Effective communication, interpersonal, and classroom management skills
  • Ability to work independently, exercise professional judgment, and manage library operations without on-site supervision
  • Ability to plan and deliver library instruction lessons appropriate to student grade level and curriculum needs

Experience

  • Minimum one year of experience working with children or in a school setting
  • Minimum one year of clerical or office experience
  • Prior experience in a library, library aide, or librarian role strongly preferred

Major Responsibilities and Duties

Campus Library Management

  • Independently manage all daily operations of the campus library during school hours, serving as the primary library professional on site.
  • Establish and maintain an orderly, welcoming library environment that supports student learning and a love of reading.
Open and close the library according to the campus schedule; manage access, traffic flow, and daily routines.

  • Coordinate scheduling of library classes, open library periods, and special projects with teachers and campus administration.

Library Instruction and Program Support

  • Plan and deliver developmentally appropriate library instruction lessons to individual students, small groups, and whole classes, including information literacy, research skills, digital citizenship, and reader engagement.
  • Assist students and staff in locating and utilizing library resources.
  • Support campus literacy initiatives, including Accelerated Reader (AR), by monitoring student progress, encouraging reading, and helping teachers interpret data.
  • Prepare and maintain engaging bulletin boards, displays, and instructional materials that promote reading and support curriculum themes.

Collection Management and Circulation

  • Operate and maintain the library’s automated circulation system (Follett Destiny), including check-in, check-out, renewals, and holds.
  • Receive and shelve new books, materials, and equipment.
  • Maintain an organized, accurate library collection by shelving materials following the district cataloging system and regularly shelf-reading for accuracy.
  • Prepare materials for classroom use, reserve collections, and teacher-requested resource sets.
  • Repair books, magazines, and materials, or process damaged items for outside repair.
  • Assess campus curriculum needs and student interests to develop collection recommendations using Follett Titlewave, including building and organizing saved lists, adding notes, and analyzing collection gaps; submit finalized lists to the district librarian for purchasing and administrative processing.

Recordkeeping, Accounting, and Administrative Support

  • Collect and maintain accurate records of student fines, lost materials, and overdue notifications; prepare parent communications as needed.
  • Perform routine maintenance on audiovisual equipment; report equipment failures and coordinate repair as needed.

Student Supervision and Campus Support

  • Supervise student behavior in the library at all times, maintaining a safe, productive, and respectful environment.
  • Implement campus behavior management expectations and de-escalate student conflicts consistent with campus policies.
  • Perform assigned campus monitoring duties as directed by campus administration.

Volunteer and Student Aide Coordination

  • Recruit, train, schedule, and supervise parent volunteers and student library aides.
  • Assign tasks and provide ongoing guidance to volunteers and student aides to support library operations.

Collaboration and Professional Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with classroom teachers to align library resources and instruction with campus curriculum and instructional objectives.
  • Communicate regularly with the district librarian regarding collection needs, program updates, and administrative requirements.
  • Participate in campus staff meetings, professional development, and district library meetings as required.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student records and patron information consistent with district policy and applicable law.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Directly supervises parent volunteers and student library aides assigned to the campus library.

Equipment Used

Personal computer, printer, copier, barcode scanner, audiovisual and media equipment, Follett Titlewave, Follett Destiny circulation system, Accelerated Reader (AR) and Star platforms, TexQuest research databases.

Working Conditions

Mental Demands

Must exercise independent professional judgment in a dynamic campus environment. Frequent interruptions; ability to manage multiple concurrent tasks. Maintain emotional control under stress. Ability to make timely decisions regarding student supervision, patron service, and library operations without immediate supervisory guidance.

Physical Demands

Frequent walking, standing, climbing step stools, stretching, bending, and kneeling. Regular lifting of books, boxes, and audiovisual equipment (up to 30 lbs). Repetitive use of keyboard and computer equipment.

Environmental Factors

Work primarily in a school library setting. Regular contact with students, staff, parents, and the public.
