Library Archives Intern

At United Lutheran Seminary, we preserve the rich history of faith communities through the materials entrusted to us by the congregations of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and the documents associated with the long history of the seminary itself which was founded in 1826. We offer students hands-on experience in archival stewardship while advancing academic research and public access to historical materials.

Join our dynamic team at United Lutheran Seminary, Gettysburg Campus, as a Library Archives Intern and immerse yourself in the fascinating world of archival management and collection preservation. This paid internship offers a unique opportunity to develop hands-on experience in managing archival collections, digitization projects, and library services. You will work closely with experienced archivists and librarians, gaining insight into the principles of cataloging and resource description while contributing to the preservation of valuable historical and cultural materials. This role is perfect for motivated individuals passionate about information management, research, and church heritage. The intern may also utilize archival and/or non-archival materials to plan and prepare a display and/or contribute content to the library blog.

Responsibilities: The specific duties of this internship may include:

· Helping identify and assess the archival value of materials;

· Processing of collections, including physical arrangement (sorting, boxing, labeling);

· Description of materials and creation of basic finding aids;

· Developing the archival database;

· Contributing content to the library blog and/or creating an exhibit.

Requirements:

· Basic computer skills

· Completion of introductory courses in public history and/or archives principles and practices is preferred.

· Interest in Lutheran Church history is helpful but not required.

Please note: Intern must be willing to work in an environment that involves exposure to dust. Must also be able to do extensive computer work, move 35 lb. boxes, and bend at the knees, stretch overhead, and climb ladders to pull and move books/boxes. Punctuality is essential.
