Library Assistant - Cambridge Branch

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Works under the supervision of the Head of the Information Department and Circulation Manager. Performs the duties of a department member including but not limited to reference services, Inter-Library Loan, alphabetizing and shelving materials, technical processing of materials, inventorying of the library’s collections, circulation duties, and building security and public safety.

Examples of Typical Tasks:

  • Establishes and maintains good working relations with all library users, volunteers, and co-workers.
  • Promotes good public relations by providing courteous and helpful service to all patrons.
  • Assists the public by answering their requests for information
  • May perform Circulation Desk duties including but not limited to checking library materials in and out, issuing borrowers cards, assisting in maintaining records of circulated materials and patron accounts
  • Answers the telephone in a courteous manner, directs inquiries to appropriate departments, takes accurate messages, and assists patrons in their use of the public photocopier
  • Must be able to effectively and professionally assist library patrons
  • Prepares bi-monthly reports as well as other reports as requested
  • As required, attends and participates in library meetings and staff development programs
  • Must be able to substitute at Hurlock Branch Library as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

Associates degree or some college preferred.

Required:

  • High School diploma or GED
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills
  • Proficiency using computers including MS Office, e-mail, using the Internet, and ability to operate office equipment
  • Ability to determine reliable resources
  • General clerical skills
  • Excellent customer service and inter-personal skills
  • Ability to accurately handle and record cash receipts
  • Ability to work independently as well as with others

Special consideration will be given to candidates with public library experience, including the use of integrated library systems, completion of reference service training, excellent technological skills (troubleshooting, 3D printing, etc.) and programming experience.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Primary work site is the Cambridge Branch Library. Some travel to professional meetings, Hurlock Branch, and workshops is required. All staff are required to work alternating Fridays/Saturdays, and one evening per week until 7pm.

Equipment: Must be able to use and/or operate equipment including but not limited to a multi-line telephone, fax machine, fully loaded book cart, passenger elevator, photocopier, personal computer, calculator, circulation equipment, and be able to lift 25 pounds.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $31,000.00 - $33,000.00 per year
