POSITION TITLE: Library Assistant I (Part-Time)
DEPARTMENT: Library Learning Commons (LLC)
PRIMARY LOCATION: Multiple Bristol locations; Must be able to work at the Bristol Taunton Center
REPORTS TO: Reference Librarian
POSITION STATUS: This is a part-time, non-unit position without benefits not to exceed 18.5 hours per week.
SCHEDULE: The Library Assistant I works a set schedule of hours at one or more locations (minimum 8 hours per week) and may be assigned additional hours on a call-in basis. Weekly schedule may not exceed 18.5 hours per week. Position requires flexibility to cover absences at multiple LLC locations. Evenings and weekends may be required. Hours subject to change depending on operational needs. The ability to work at more than one Bristol location is a plus.
There are current open shifts available at the Taunton Center LLC which is open Monday-Thursday, 10am to 3pm.
SALARY: $22.38 per hour

STATEMENT OF DUTIES: The Library Assistant I provides front-line support in the Library Learning Commons (LLC) at one or more locations (Attleboro, Fall River, New Bedford and Taunton). This position assists patrons at the public service desk, performs circulation functions using the integrated library system (Koha), helps patrons with printing, and provides general information about library and tutoring services. The Library Assistant I also helps to monitor the LLC's chat and email accounts, ensuring accurate information is provided.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform access services functions (e.g., checking in and out materials, registering patrons, and responding to inquiries via phone, chat and in-person).
  • Provide excellent customer service while responding to a variety of library- and college-related questions. Refer research-related inquiries to the Reference Librarian.
  • Help students understand tutoring services, locate available tutors, and make tutoring appointments.
  • Assist with other library functions (e.g., physical processing of books and other library materials, interlibrary loan and document delivery processes, preparing and maintaining course reserves, and/or re-shelving materials).
  • Perform inventory, shelf-reading, and other maintenance tasks in the collection. Retrieve books as requested.
  • Support LLC patrons with photocopiers, printers, microform readers, scanners, LiveScribe pens, and other library and assistive technology. Refer users to appropriate departments for additional support, if necessary.
  • Repair books and other materials to prolong use, as needed.
  • Focus on customer service best practices when working with Bristol community members, including faculty, staff, and students.
  • Focus on the Commonwealth's Equity Agenda by applying related best practices throughout all job functions.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

NOTE: Unless otherwise noted, all required qualifications must be met by date of hire.

  • Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent.

Demonstrated ability to:

  • Work accurately with names, numbers, codes, and/or symbols.
  • Assemble items of information according to established procedures.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively in the workplace.
  • Handle interactions with tact and professionalism.
  • Establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with others.
  • Follow verbal and written instructions.

  • Maintain a consistent work schedule.
  • Work evenings and/or weekends as business needs dictate.

If assigned to work at multiple sites, must have reliable transportation to campus locations.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Demonstrated experience in an academic or public library setting.
  • Familiarity with Library of Congress Classification.
  • Familiarity with standard office technology (e.g., photocopier/printer, multi-line phone) and basic computer functions.
  • Basic understanding of the Koha online catalog used at HELM libraries or previous experience with an online library circulation system.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office 365 applications.
  • Experience with other academic software systems (e.g., Navigate 360, Canvas, etc.).
  • Familiarity with Live Scribe pens and other assistive technology.
  • Ability to speak a language in addition to English.
