Library Assistant II- Metadata Specialist

Hiring Department: Library

Reports To: Library Assistant III

Job Location: Onsite El Paso

Hours: 40 hours per week, standard Monday- Friday

FLSA status: non-exempt

Earliest Start Date: As soon as possible.

Salary: Commensurate with experience and education.

Position Summary


Responsible for database maintenance, including copy and complex cataloging of all formats (with a focus on Children’s books and multi-media formats), and adding volumes and copies, and maintenance of bibliographic and verifying authority records (series, name, and subject). Coordinates the processing of library materials. Performs clean-up projects as assigned.

Statement of Duties and Responsibilities:

Cataloging

  • Performs copy and complex cataloging of all library materials in all formats.
  • Adds volumes and copies, the performance of which may require basic and occasionally complex changes to bibliographic and holdings records.
  • Verifies and assigns Library of Congress call numbers and Dewey Decimal Classification call numbers.
  • Re-catalog materials that require basic and occasionally complex changes to the bibliography records and holdings.
  • Understands and verifies authority control on the local automated information systems using local policies and national authority policies and records.
  • Coordinate the processing of library materials and resolve problems requiring comprehensive knowledge of library locations and procedures.
  • Search all types of bibliography entries, using creative thought occasionally, leading to intricate search strategies.
  • Creates, reviews, and maintains documentation on Copy Cataloging policies and procedures with the Metadata Specialist Supervisor and the Section Head of Metadata and Content Management.
  • Performs or oversees the training of interns and student employees for routine tasks and special projects carried out in the department; monitors work performance of these interns and student employees.

Statistics

  • Maintains statistics for copy cataloging and any other tasks completed and submits them to the Metadata Specialist Supervisor.

Professional Development

  • Keeps up to date with local Cataloging practices and attends relevant training and meetings.
  • Engages in appropriate professional development and training opportunities.
  • Attends and participates in departmental and library meetings and develops and executes projects in collaboration with other staff.

Collaboration

  • Collaborates, trains, and works well with other departments, such as Special Collections or Research and Instruction, to ensure library users acquire all their research needs as it pertains to Cataloging.
  • Participates, assists, and collaborates with other Discovery Services staff to accomplish departmental projects efficient
  • May be cross trained with other staff to meet the needs of the Discovery Services and the Library.
  • Assists in the Media and Microforms department as needed.
  • Participates in library-wide planning and activities and serves on committees.

Other Duties

  • Assists in all Discovery Services departments as needed.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Knowledge of all Microsoft Office software and able to learn and use institutional software systems.

Complies with all State and University policies.


Supervisory Responsibilities
: Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable

laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising

performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; and addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

Education: High school diploma or equivalent is required

and

Experience: 2 years experience in an automated library environment. Must meet basic computer competencies


Preferred Qualifications:
Two years experience in an automated cataloging operation.

Supervisory experience.

Skills and Knowledge

Demonstrated knowledge of automated library systems is required.

Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team is required.

Familiarity with word processing and spreadsheet application is desirable.

Working knowledge of Spanish is preferred. Accuracy and attention to detail in work is required.

Ability to operate a variety of library and office equipment, including computer, printer, barcode scanner, computer keyboard, mouse, and other peripherals at an intermediate level.

Uses Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel at a basic level.

Types accurately 30-45 wpm (95% accuracy) using a computer keyboard.
