The Board of Directors of the Dickinson Area Public Library is seeking dedicated, community-minded individuals to serve as board members and help guide the library’s mission, policies, and long-term success.
About the LibraryEstablished by the City of Dickinson in accordance with North Dakota Century Code, Chapter 40-38, the Dickinson Area Public Library serves as a vital hub for learning, discovery, and connection. Governed by a dedicated Board of Directors, the library provides inclusive access to information, fosters lifelong learning, and strengthens our community through dynamic services and programming.
Board Member ResponsibilitiesAs a member of the Board of Directors, you will:
Uphold legal and fiduciary responsibilities as defined in Chapter 40-38 of the North Dakota Century Code.
Collaborate with fellow board members and the Library Director to adopt and oversee policies guiding all phases of library operations.
Participate in approving and monitoring the library’s annual budget and expenditures.
Hire, evaluate, and support the Library Director.
Review and maintain the library’s facilities, ensuring they meet evolving community needs.
Advocate for library services and public support at the local, regional, and state level.
Serve as a steward of the library’s mission, working cooperatively with public officials, community leaders, and library users.
Attend regular board meetings and actively contribute to governance activities.

Board members are appointed to three-year terms beginning in July.
Appointments are made by the Dickinson City Commission, with one additional appointment possible by the County Commission.
Members must reside within the Dickinson Area Public Library's current service area, which includes not only the residents of Dickinson but also all of Stark, Slope, and Billings counties.
