General Statement of Duties
Performs routine work providing maintenance and upkeep of the library and basic library duties.
Job Responsibilities
Distinguishing Features of the Class
An employee in this class is responsible for circulation and shelving materials. Work is performed under regular supervision of the Library Manager.
Illustrative Examples of Work
- Checks materials in and out.
- Provides assistance to patrons.
- Registers patrons for library services.
- Issues new or replacement library cards.
- Provides assistance to patrons working with library equipment.
- Assists patrons with general questions and locating materials.
- Collects and records financial transactions.
- Shelves returned material; reads shelves to maintain order.
- May assist with preparation for story times.
- Adheres to the department's safety rules and regulations.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge; Skills and Abilities
- Ability to perform intermediate functions on the computer including the internet; Word and Excel.
- Ability to use and assist others in the use of office equipment.
- Working knowledge of the Dewey Decimal System and ability to shelve books and other library materials.
- Ability to count and record money accurately.
Education and Experience
High School Diploma or current student working toward diploma or GED with some experience in customer service and excellent computer skills; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must be 16 years of age or older. Birth Certificate if under age 18. Valid North Carolina Driver License. Youth employment certificate unless specifically exempted.

Physical Requirements
- Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational support functions of climbing; stooping; kneeling; crouching; crawling; reaching; standing; walking;pushing; pulling; lifting; fingering; grasping; feeling; talking; hearing and repetitive motions.
- Must be able to perform medium work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally; and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently; and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- Worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform transcription; work on a computer terminal and perform extensive reading.
- Worker is subject to inside environmental conditions: Protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes.
- Worker is subject to both environmental conditions: Activities occur inside and outside.
- Worker is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions (such as in typical office or administrative work).
