Library Clerk-Part Time

Under direct supervision, the Library Clerk performs a variety of routine and moderately complex tasks to support daily library operations. Responsibilities include circulation services, customer service, basic reference assistance, computer support, and maintenance of library materials. The Library Clerk plays a key role in providing positive and helpful service to patrons of all ages.

This position requires flexibility, as work hours may include days, evenings, and weekends on a rotating schedule based on operational needs.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities (Illustrative Only)

  • Shelves, organizes, and maintains library materials in proper order.
  • Uses library management software to update patron accounts, check item status, and perform routine catalog searches.
  • Issues library cards and explains account policies and procedures.
  • Checks library materials in and out and processes renewals, holds, and returns.
  • Collects, records, and reconciles fines, fees, and other routine transactions.
  • Maintains basic circulation statistics and assists with simple recordkeeping tasks.
  • Provides courteous and efficient assistance to library patrons, including basic reference and computer support.
  • Operates office and library equipment such as telephones, computers, printers, copiers, and scanners.
  • Assists with library programs, displays, and special projects as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

This position is subject to the City of Portland’s Background Investigation and Drug Testing Policy. New hires are required to provide proof of identity and legal authority to work in the United States per Federal law.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required. Previous paid library experience is a plus.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to effectively use computer applications such as spreadsheets, word processing, calendar, e-mail and database software
  • Strong customer service skills and the ability to work effectively with patrons of all ages.
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions and maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to organize materials alphabetically and numerically.
  • Team player.
  • Must be able to lift at least 25 pounds, climb stools and have excellent reading skills.
