Library Clerk - Seasonal - TEMPORARY POSITION/SHORT-TERM

Job Description

The City of Saratoga Springs currently has an opening for a Seasonal Library Clerk at the Saratoga Springs Library, approximately 40 hours per week. This position is a Temporary Summer position from May 18th to August 22nd. This position is under the supervision of the Senior Librarian. Library Clerk performs a variety of duties related to the circulation of materials, special programming and assisting patrons. This position requires attention to detail, good organization skills, some knowledge of library reference, circulation, cataloging and classification methods, practices and procedures and the ability to work positively with the general public. Library Clerks will be required to provide basic supervision to library volunteers during their designated volunteer shifts. They are responsible for shelving, checking in returns, emptying the book drops, shelf reading, and helping answer customer questions. No cash handling. No CPR or First Aid required for these positions.

Job Responsibilities

  • Performs general duties related to the circulation of library materials, greets patrons and assists with requests, initiates exchange of information required in the lending of library materials, checks in library materials
  • Assists patrons with computer use
  • Assists patrons in locating books and materials
  • Shelves materials
  • Segregates books and other materials needing repairs
  • Performs other duties as assigned


Qualifications

Education & Experience:

  • Must be 16 years of age or older
  • Must be able to read and write in English and perform basic mathematic functions
  • There is no previous experience required for this position; however preference will be given to applicants with at least 6 months of experience in general library services and/or a knowledge of KOHA ILS software system.

Certifications:

There are no certifications required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of library practices and procedures
  • Knowledge of general PC computer operations
  • Knowledge of correct use of English language and vocabulary, both written and oral
  • Ability to interact with the public while maintaining a professional, pleasant, and courteous demeanor
  • Ability to utilize excellent customer service skills
  • Ability to exercise sound and good judgment at all times
  • Ability to handle confidential information in a sensitive manner
  • Ability to proficiently operate a computer and instruct others on how to perform basic computer functions
  • Ability to communicate in a concise and effective manner
  • Ability to utilize Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, Internet Explorer, and related software
  • Ability to utilize KOHA ILS software
  • Ability to utilize efficiently office equipment including, but not limited to, a photo copier, telephone, facsimile, calculator, and shredder
  • Ability to utilize efficiently time management skills

  • Sit at a desk or table to staff the Front Desk
  • Sit at a desk or table to operate a computer and related equipment
  • Must be able to regularly walk, stand or stoop
  • Must be able to lift, carry, push, pull or move boxes weighing up to 30 pounds
  • Must be able to lift, carry, push, pull or move carts of items weighing up to 100 pounds
  • Work for sustained periods of time maintaining attention to detail

Compensation and Benefits
Salary Range:
The salary for this position is 16.00/hr.

Schedule:

Temporary Positions: From May 18th to August 22nd.

11:00 am to 8:00 pm Monday to Thursday (with a one-hour lunch)

8:00 am to 4:30 pm - Saturday (with a half-hour lunch)
