A Library-cum-GK Teacher is a dual-role educator responsible for managing the school library and teaching General Knowledge (GK). The job combines traditional library and information science tasks with classroom teaching, focusing on building strong reading habits and broad knowledge among students.

Library duties

Collection management: Curating, organizing, and cataloging a wide range of books and resources, including print and digital materials.

Library promotion: Encouraging students to use the library and promoting a love of reading through displays, activities, and events.

Student assistance: Helping students and other teachers find relevant resources for their interests and coursework.

Information literacy: Training students on research skills, how to find and evaluate information online, and proper use of library databases.

Administration: Handling daily library operations, maintaining library records, and ensuring the space is clean and organized.

GK teacher duties

Curriculum design: Developing and delivering engaging lesson plans for general knowledge based on the relevant curriculum.

Instruction: Teaching classes on a wide variety of topics, including history, geography, science, current events, and more.

Activity planning: Organizing workshops, quizzes, and competitions like poetry, painting, and singing to promote active learning and broaden students' horizons.

Engaging the community: Encouraging and inviting people of all ages to visit the library, read books, or engage with magazines.

Key qualifications and skills

Educational background: A Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) with either a Master of Library and Information Science (M.Lib.Sc.) or a Bachelor of Library and Information Science (B.Lib.Sc.) is typically required.

Excellent communication: You need strong verbal and written communication skills to interact effectively with students, staff, and management.

Knowledge of technology: Proficiency in library automation software (like Koha or Libsys), basic IT troubleshooting, and the ability to find and evaluate online resources is essential.

Organizational and managerial skills: The role requires strong planning, coordination, and time management skills to handle both library and teaching responsibilities.

Customer service orientation: This includes a sincere commitment to user satisfaction and a desire to meet students' and teachers' information needs effectively.

Creativity: A good candidate is creative in their lesson planning and in organizing activities that promote reading and learning.
