Job Description – Library Director

Salary Schedule: $47,000 - $60,000 per year; 35 - 40 hours per week

Summary: Oversee operations of Eldorado Memorial Public Library.

Essential Duties:

  • Hire, direct, and supervise staff
  • Plan and direct regular staff meetings
  • Arrange for staff training
  • Facilitate staff communication
  • Oversee daily library procedures
  • Manage library infrastructure
  • Manage library collection and circulation
  • Manage library services
  • Manage library website
  • Advise board on policies for building and library services
  • Establish and evaluate library procedures
  • Attend all board meetings and report to the board monthly about the state of the library’s finances, statistics, and planning
  • Prepare and submit necessary reports to the EML board, Illinois State Library, and other entities
  • Act as the library district’s Freedom of Information Act officer
  • Manage record retention to comply with Illinois Local Records Act
  • Create the library’s budget with the board’s Finance Committee and adhere to the budget
  • Approve bills and prepare them for the bookkeeper
  • Record daily financial records for monthly report to the board
  • Deposit monies in appropriate amounts
  • Handle library correspondence
  • Handle complaints, problems, etc.
  • Comply with regulations and provisions of the Illinois Library Act
  • Seek, apply for, and administer grants
  • Ensure timely posting of library information
  • Represent the library at community events
  • Attend library meetings, conferences, and continuing education as approved by the board
  • Other duties as assigned

EML’s Library Director must also be proficient at all duties performed by the EML Lead Library Clerk.

Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily by the end of the first 90 days of service. Education and/or Experience: The EML Board of Trustees appoints a qualified librarian as library administrator and delegates active management of the library to the library administrator. According to Serving Our Public, a qualified librarian is a person holding an MLS degree from an ALA-accredited program. Knowledge and/or prior experience in the following areas is preferred for this position: customer service, organization, working on a team, and working with computer hardware and software.

Communication and Interpersonal Skill Requirements: The Library Director must be able to work with minimal supervision, be coachable, have good judgment, perform well under pressure, promote the library in a positive manner through interactions with patrons and visitors, readily adapt to change, and work with teammates, details, and patrons simultaneously. They will use email and other technology to connect and communicate with staff and patrons.

Schedule: This job is a salary position and requires daytime, evening, and occasional weekend hours. Work schedules will be made to benefit the library’s best interest.

All staff members at Eldorado Memorial Public Library are expected to be on time, neatly groomed, respectful to staff members, courteous to patrons, and generally helpful.
