The City of Independence is seeking a dependable and detail-oriented individual to join our Library team as a Maintenance Technician. This position plays a key role in ensuring the library’s physical plant and premises remain safe and in good repair. Position open until filled. First application review 03/16/2026.

Position Overview

  • Status: Part-Time Regular
  • FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

The Role

As a Maintenance Technician, you will perform routine maintenance and repair tasks for the library’s interior and exterior areas. Duties include basic repairs, seasonal upkeep, and responding to building-related emergencies. This position requires reliability, independence, and the ability to work safely with tools and equipment. Generally 2-3 hours per week.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintain interior areas: replace light bulbs, perform routine maintenance and repairs.
  • Maintain exterior premises: assist with removal of leaves, snow, ice, and care for plants/shrubs.
  • Assist with HVAC upkeep: observe equipment operation and report issues.
  • Keep storage areas neat and organized; move furniture, books, and equipment.
  • Respond to emergencies affecting the building and contents.
  • Clean designated areas such as basement steps, vents, and lights.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Library Director.

Qualifications & Requirements

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Ability to work independently and efficiently.
  • Ability to read charts, gauges, and diagrams.
  • Skilled in using hand tools, sweeper, and snow blower.
  • Ability to follow directions, maintain records, and adhere to safety procedures.
  • Physical ability to carry boxes up and down stairs and work from a 20-foot ladder.
  • Trustworthy and able to work without supervision.

Education/Training: High school diploma or GED required.
Experience: Prior experience in maintenance of physical plant preferred.
Licensing: Must possess a valid State of Iowa driver’s license.
Physical Requirements: Ability to lift and carry boxes, climb ladders, and perform physical tasks safely.

Work Environment

Primarily indoors with occasional outdoor tasks. Exposure to seasonal weather conditions when working outside.

Hours of Work

Generally 2–3 hours per week; flexible schedule based on library needs. No guaranteed number of hours per week or month.
