The Shrewsbury Public Library, a bustling community hub, is seeking a Library Manager - Head of Adult Services to join our dedicated management team. The Library welcomed 292,296 patrons in FY 2025 and hosted over 500 programs with over 5,000 attendees. This key position plays a vital role in connecting the Shrewsbury community to valuable resources by planning, organizing, and supervising the operations of the Adult Services Department. Leading a team of public service professionals, you will coordinate impactful programming, manage marketing efforts, and oversee collection development, all while ensuring the highest level of customer service.
What You’ll Do:
Lead Departmental Operations: Oversee the daily operations of the Adult Services Department to ensure top-notch service delivery, general public safety, and alignment with library policies.
Supervise & Mentor Staff: Train, supervise, and evaluate a dedicated team of two full-time professional Reference Librarians, as well as department volunteers. Support their professional growth through the annual performance appraisal process.
Strategic Planning & Budgeting: Assist the Library Director in establishing strategic goals, managing the departmental budget for materials and programming, and identifying, procuring, and administering grants.
Cultivate the Collection: Develop and maintain all aspects of the adult nonfiction collection, including books, audio-visual materials, multimedia, online databases, and the library's expanding "Library of Things".
Engage the Community: Plan, organize, promote, and facilitate informational, recreational, and cultural adult programming, including the English Conversation Circle, Memory Café, Genealogy Club, and summer reading programs.
Manage Events & Marketing: Act as the primary contact for performers and event leaders; manage contracts, vendor payments, room setups, and department-wide marketing and social media promotions.
Provide Direct Patron Support: Deliver professional reference and reader's advisory services, and offer technical assistance and training to both staff and patrons utilizing library software, hardware, and digital tools.
Digital & Public Communication: Maintain and update the adult services section of the library's website and resolve sensitive patron inquiries or complaints with professional diplomacy.
What We’re Looking For:
An ALA-accredited Master's Degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS), and three (3) years of professional library experience in a public library environment, coupled with two (2) to four (4) years of supervisory experience ; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
A proven track record of serving diverse populations with a deep understanding of varied cultural, socio-economic, and accessibility needs.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly articulate complex ideas to staff, stakeholders, and patrons alike.
Familiarity with library management systems, digital tools, and emerging public library trends.
Exceptional collaboration, conflict resolution, and relationship-building skills.
A self-motivated leader capable of working independently, solving practical problems, and adapting smoothly to changing institutional priorities.
Work Hours & Benefits
The Library Manager of Adult Services works from a public-facing shared office space with our two Reference Librarians. This position spends significant time both covering our reference desk and moving around a very busy library, assisting and overseeing staff members and patrons. The Library Manager of Adult Services primarily works Monday-Friday, with one evening shift a week and one Saturday shift a month, with the schedule to be adjusted as needed for coverage.
