Library Media and Communications Specialist

Position: Library Media and Communications Specialist

Hours: 8:15 am-3:15 pm; Thursday 8:15 am-4:15 pm, ½ hour lunch break

10 month position follows 217 day calendar

Primary Responsibilities

The Library Media & Communications Specialist operates the school's comprehensive library program in addition to directing school-wide communications, branding, and multimedia production. This role combines library skills instruction, collection, digital media production, and the school's communications into a combined position that supports student learning, faculty collaboration, and visibility.

The position requires specialized expertise in literacy instruction, educational technology, multimedia production, and digital communications.

1. Library Media & Communications Specialist is responsible for:

  • Facilitating all aspects of the school library program serving students from Pre-K through 8th Grade.
  • Creating a strategic collection development plan aligned with curriculum goals and student needs.
  • Suggestion of budget, selection, acquisition, cataloging, and lifecycle of library materials provided to supervisor.
  • Design and deliver structured instruction in literacy, research skills, media literacy, and digital citizenship.
  • Provide school-wide literacy programming through initiatives such as Book Fairs, World Read Aloud Day, guest reader invitations, and thematic programming.
  • Maintain a dynamic, accessible library environment that supports diverse learners
  • Relevant presentation of books and materials on a constant basis.
2. Instructional Collaboration & Professional Support

  • Serve as an instructional partner to Principal and educational staff in curriculum planning and resource integration.
  • Provide consultation in literacy resources, research instruction, and educational technology.
  • Curate and manage a digital library resource hub for students, staff, and families.
  • Support differentiated learning needs through targeted resource recommendations.
3. Communications & Brand Management

  • Conduct and create school-wide communications strategy across digital and print platforms providing insight and coverage of school activities and events.
  • Content creation and production for all social media communications, and digital lobby displays with consistent relevance.
  • Develop and maintain cohesive visual branding across all school publications and materials.
  • Design and produce high-quality promotional materials including brochures, flyers, digital graphics, digital correspondences for stakeholders upon request and the annual Spectrum Newsletter/Annual Report.
  • Provide comprehensive media coverage, including photography and videography.
  • Lead video production and post-production editing, ensuring content meets platform specifications and accessibility standards.
  • Direct multimedia projects including all classroom and instructional activities, graduation productions and annual yearbook publication.
  • Maintain media inventory
  • Assist Technology team as needed
  • Report issues that may be harmful to the reputation of the school on social media upon research.
  • Coordinate and manage school Picture Day operations.
Any Additional duties as assigned not to exceed 5% of duties listed above.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • New York State Certification as a School Library Media Specialist (or eligibility for certification).
  • Preferred proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) and ability to communicate effectively with Deaf and hard-of-hearing students.
  • Experience in library collection development, cataloging systems, and library program management.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in multimedia production, including operation of professional video equipment, photography equipment, lighting, and audio tools.
  • Advanced working knowledge of video editing software and digital publishing platforms.
  • Ability to design and produce professional-quality print and digital communications materials.
  • Strong organizational, project management, and cross-department collaboration skills.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and expedite requests in a timely fashion
  • Willingness to learn new procedures relevant to position and compliancy
  • Knowledge of social media tools and events upon consistent research that pertains to the school.

SALARY RANGE

$66,964.00 - $110,498.00
