Library Paraprofessional/ Medica Center Specialist

Job Title: Library Paraprofessional / Media Center Specialist

Reports to: School Principal

Position Type: Full-time


Job Overview

Seeking a self-motivated individual to be part of the FCS library/media program, performing a variety of computer, clerical, and library duties in a school library, and providing information and assistance to students and staff.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Communicate to students the proper use of the library, its procedures and policies, and book care, preparing for reading aloud and library classes.
  • Instruct students in the use of the online catalog and online databases.
  • Integrate various types of media, technology, and information literacy into library instruction.
  • Select and order books and other media specific to the needs of the school.
  • Utilize the online cataloging software to keep an inventory of all library resources, sending out overdue notices as needed.
  • Catalog, process, and add new items to the inventory. Wash and repair books as needed.
  • Prepare and execute special events, programs, and reading-related activities.
  • Manage the library budget.
  • Conduct an annual inventory. Correct any errors or omissions found.
  • Maintain the library learning environment so that it is clean, safe, accessible, engaging, and comfortable.
  • Regularly put books on display in the library and promote materials to students and staff via email or social media.
  • Recruit, train, and schedule library volunteers.
  • Assist teachers in gathering and finding books, websites, and database resources for classroom units.
  • Contribute to the school community in positive ways by serving on committees and other duties as assigned by the principal.
  • Must be able to bend and squat throughout the day to shelve books.
  • Utilize a large variety of web tools to communicate and work with students and staff, including G Suite for Education (Google docs, drive, sheets, etc.), and email. Maintain library social media accounts according to district expectations.
  • Attend training and professional development.
  • Express an openness to work with students in small groups or one on one using teacher provided materials as needed/directed by the Principal.
  • Work with students on check ins, recovery breaks, etc as your schedule permits as directed by the Principal.
  • Support students’ knowledge of the school-wide PBIS expectations along with implementing your own library management plan with guidance from the Behavior Coach and/or Principal.
  • Keep a positive, calm, quiet, respectful environment within the Library at all times.

  • Manage loaner and repair tickets for building Chromebooks within TDT Asset Manager.
  • Serve as a liaison between students and the technology department in regards to Chromebook concerns.
  • Maintain loaner device carts for the building in coordination with policies for students and staff.
  • Perform basic Chromebook troubleshooting in correspondence with the technology department’s standard operating procedures.
  • Duties as assigned by the building principal in coordination with the district librarian and/or director of technology.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent (Degree in Education or related field not required but preferred).
  • Ohio Educational Aide Permit
  • ESEA endorsement is obtained by passing the ParaPro Assessment; or holding an associate's degree; or having at least 2 years of study at an accredited institution of higher education
  • Previous experience working with children, particularly those with disabilities, is highly desirable.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Patience, empathy, and a passion for supporting students with special needs.
  • Basic proficiency in educational technology
  • Ability to handle physical tasks such as lifting and assisting students with mobility.
  • Complete all requirements in regards to Step up to Quality and Licensing.


Physical Demands & Work Environment

  • Work Type: Light work – exerting up to 40 pounds occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds frequently.
  • Physical Demands: Frequent walking, standing, sitting, reaching, hearing, and fine motor tasks; occasional crouching, kneeling, and lifting.
  • Environment: Moderate risk environment requiring safety precautions (working with students in crisis, exposure to illness, etc.).
