WAYNE COUNTY JOB DESCRIPTION for
LIBRARY DEPARTMENT

GENERAL WORK FUNCTIONS
Provides local history and reference services to patrons in a busy public library, presents public
programming for adults and teens, staffs service desks, assists library patrons to locate and use
library resources, and represents the library in the community.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 Responsible for identifying and interpreting patron needs; providing reference services,
resource selection, and technical assistance to patrons and groups in a variety of formats.

 Plans and implements library programming for teens and adults on a monthly basis
 Assists with collection management under the supervision of the Local History Librarian.
 Engages in professional development and stays informed of developments in the profession
 Assists as needed with grant applications and management.
 Serves as the library representative to committees and boards as assigned.
 Assists in the creation of the quarterly Local History newsletter
 Works with colleagues to implement the library’s mobile library services, including driving

the vehicle and representing the library at community events.

 Performs other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

 Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and methods of professional librarianship.
 Must have excellent customer service skills, and the ability to equitably, courteously,

tactfully, and effectively serve all members of the public.

 Experience or ability to be trained in implementing public programming
 Familiarity with fundamental technologies and basic computer troubleshooting.
 Basic knowledge of genealogical research methods.
 Ability to work independently in a busy environment using professional knowledge,

judgment, and discretion.

 Ability to work well as a part of a team and maintain effective work relationships with
colleagues, the general public, and partner agencies.

 Ability to design, communicate and implement long-term projects and programs.
 Ability to express ideas effectively orally and in writing.
 Archive or special collections experience desired but not required
 Ability to lift or push moderate weight (e.g. 40 pounds of books or other materials and

supplies) and to stand for extended periods of time.

 Ability to work nights and weekends on a routine and as needed basis.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Minimum:
Enrollment or a commitment to enroll in a Master’s of Library Science program.
Preferred: Master's Degree in Library Science from an American Library Association-accredited
institution.

** Must have access to transportation and maintain a valid N.C. Driver’s License with an
acceptable driving record.

MINIMUM STANDARDS REQUIRED
TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including computers, copiers,
typewriters, calculators, recording machines, etc. Must be able to exert up to 40 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds
of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of
those for Sedentary Work. Light Work usually requires walking or standing to a significant degree. However, if the use of arm and/or
leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for
Light Work.
Data Conception: Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural or composite
characteristics (whether similar or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people or things.
Interpersonal Communication: Requires the ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information. Includes giving
instructions, assignments or directions to subordinates or assistants.
Language Ability: Requires the ability to read a variety of records, forms and correspondence. Requires the ability to prepare forms,
receipts, and correspondence, using prescribed formats and conforming to all rules of punctuation, grammar, diction, and style.
Requires the ability to speak to people with poise, voice control and confidence.
Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply rational systems to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in
situations where only limited standardization exists; to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in oral, written, diagrammatic or
schedule form.
Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions.
Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in a variety of technical or professional languages including legal terminology.
Numerical Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas; to add and subtract; multiply and divide; utilize decimals
and percentages.
Form/Spatial Aptitude: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape.
Motor Coordination: Requires the ability coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using office equipment.
Manual Dexterity: Requires the ability to handle a variety of items such as office equipment. Must have minimal levels of
eye/hand/foot coordination.
Color Discrimination: Does not require the ability to differentiate between colors and shades of color.
Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable
to performing under stress and when confronted with persons acting under stress.
Physical Communication: Requires the ability to talk and hear: (Talking: expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words.

Hearing: perceiving nature of sounds by ear.) Must be able to communicate via telephone.
