Responsible for providing technical and reference assistance to children, teens, parents, teachers, and other library patrons. May assist in planning and presenting Youth Services programs for infants, toddlers, pre-school, school-aged, and teen library patrons. Other responsibilities include (but are not limited to), staffing the youth services desk, maintaining the collection, and promoting library programs.
Requires excellent customer service to staff the youth services desk and provide technical, reference, and reader’s advisory assistance to children, teens, parents, teachers, and other patrons in person or over the phone.
Assists in preparation for story times, displays, crafts and other library programs. Promotes programs and assists patrons with registration for all programs.
Assists in scheduling, planning, and presenting Youth Services programs for infant, toddler, pre-school, school-aged, and teen library patrons.
Assists in collection maintenance, including shelf reading, shifting, and moving books and other library materials.
Assists in preparing reading lists, bibliographies, flyers and other promotional materials to support department’s programs and promotions.
Minimum of high school diploma. Experience working with children in libraries, schools, or daycares preferred.
This job is contingent upon successful completion of pre-employment checks to include criminal history and background checks.
General knowledge of children’s and teen’s literature.
General knowledge of personal computer skills and MS Office software.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
Ability to interact and communicate with children, teens and their parents in a pleasant and effective manner.
Ability to plan, organize and present daily work, library programs and special projects.
Ability to learn and operate library automated systems.
Ability to organize work, set priorities, use time effectively, work independently, and meet deadlines.
Ability to communicate and work well with other staff members.
Must be able to work a continual floating schedule as needed.
Must be able to work evenings and weekends when required.
Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including office equipment such as computers, copiers, etc. Able to lift boxes of up to 50 pounds occasionally, and to push and pull library carts frequently. Frequent stooping and bending involved.
