Position Overview

Salary Range: $17.4844 - $19.2834/hour. Salary reflects Step 1 and Step 3 of a 7-step pay scale. Salary at hiring will be dependent upon the applicant's education, experience, and training.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:15 a.m. - 5:15 p.m.

Job Summary:
The Library Services Specialist III provides a high level of administrative support to the department or function manager and other department or function staff. Duties include performing a variety of support activities, such as performing or coordinating activities in support of the department or function. Specific duties vary with the department or function assigned and may include limited supervision of lower-level staff or volunteers. Incumbents typically are very proficient with computer applications.

Scope of Responsibility:
Incumbents have a moderate degree of understanding of department or functional operations and are able to work with initiative. Under management guidance the incumbent will consider various objectives and make non-routine choices within an established precedent. Incumbents must have the ability to make judgments based on their analysis of the situation within prescribed procedures. Work product has a limited impact on departmental operations and to a lesser extent the operation of the City. Incumbents must have the ability to exercise discretion regarding confidential matters and provide detailed procedural explanations or technical information. Incumbents provide supervision and training to lower-level staff and volunteers.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Lead to Lower-Level Library Staff

  • Provides proper guidance when assigning work.
  • Prioritizes work assigned to lower level staff in appropriate fashion.
Library Operations
  • When assigned to Technical Services
    • Assist with downloading records from bibliographic utility and cataloging Library materials.
    • Input, modify, and update catalog records in integrated library system.
    • Withdraw Library materials from bibliographic utility and integrated library system.
    • Correct cataloging and data entry problems in integrated library system.
    • Mend Library materials; sort materials for volunteers.
    • Prepare Library materials in print and audiovisual formats for circulation.
    • Inventory technical services supplies; recommend purchases.
    • Provide lead supervision to temporary employees and volunteers.
    • Act as backup to Technical Services Librarian as needed.
  • When assigned to Outreach Services
    • Select, process, and rotate library materials for the Bookmobile and Senior/Homebound collections; requires knowledge of library resources, understanding of age-appropriate materials.
    • Serve as substitute for Bookmobile librarian as needed.
    • Process Bookmobile patron requests and hold items.
    • Assist in the delivery of library materials to homebound residents, nursing and senior facilities. Help with unloading and reloading of the Senior/Homebound vehicle and set up of library materials in the respective facilities; drive vehicle when needed. Appropriate level of driver’s license is required.
    • Provide customer service; check in and check out Library materials; provide reader’s advisory to patrons; recognize patron needs and abilities and make recommendations based upon them.
    • Maintain Senior/Homebound records. Know where patrons reside and maintain delivery schedules.
    • Provide assistance to Senior/Homebound and Bookmobile librarians as required.
Patron Services
  • Provide general information services to Library patrons within the scope of responsibility; assist patrons in locating and using Library materials, equipment and services; perform basic computer searches; reference searches.
  • Assist in public relations through a positive attitude and through community contacts, Library committees, and newsletter submissions.
  • Assist with tours and visits to the library
Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Skills

Required Qualifications and Skills:


  • High school diploma
  • Three (3) years or more of combined education and experience, or equivalent
  • The job requires strong interpersonal skills
Preferred Qualifications and Skills:
  • Experience with city government and knowledge of department or function operations is preferred.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

Requires significant physical effort, moving between 25 and 60 pounds, where effort is occasional between 15% and 45% of the time. Requires high attention to detail or deadlines occasionally (between 15% and 45% of the time). Work requires exposure to multiple disagreeable elements, none of which are of greater than moderate intensity, on an occasional basis (between 15% and 45% of the time). Depending on the position, frequent driving may be required.
