Library Special Services Coordinator - Adult Education

The primary function of this position is to support the literacy needs of Leon County residents. The person in this position acts as the English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program coordinator. The Library Special Services Coordinator (Literacy) recruits volunteer tutors and matches them with a variety of learners, including adult learners seeking General Educational Development (GED) training. Work involves assisting library users in selecting and borrowing materials, handling customer service issues, and other related duties as assigned.

Essential Duties

Department Focus: Literacy Coordinate the Librarys Adult Literacy efforts. Assist in the development, implementation, and evaluation of program, services, and outreach related to adult literacy including workshops and programs. Assist with identifying funding opportunities and works with the Librarys Grants and Contracts Specialist to secure funding related to adult literacy services and programs. Work with a team to build and maintain partnerships with local organizations supporting adult literacy. Facilitate the Literacy Lab Resource Center, which involves recruiting, training, and assessing and retaining ESOL program interns, overseeing learners' applications, communicating, connecting tutors with learners, and managing statistics for the program system wide. Make recommendations for the addition of print and digital adult literacy materials for the Librarys Collection.

Direct Public Service: Assist patrons with library resources and services, including the online catalog, hold requests, account features, self-checkout, curbside services, and locating materials or suitable alternatives. Provide reference and informational support in person, by phone, and electronically; refer complex inquiries to professional staff as needed. Oversee public technology use, troubleshoot hardware and software issues, and offer individual or group instruction on print and electronic resources. Perform daily circulation and customer service duties, including greeting patrons, managing checkouts, resolving account issues, and maintaining adherence to library procedures. Support system-wide operations, including staff coverage at other locations, handling financial transactions and deposits, and managing complex circulation tasks with accuracy and professionalism.

Department/Branch Support: Assist with maintaining the collection by creating displays and removing outdated/damaged items and updating the library database. Assist with shelving and troubleshoot missing materials. Report any ILS, OPAC, computer, or self-check/printer/scanner malfunctions immediately. Additional duties as necessitated by operational needs.

Programming and Outreach: Assist in planning and delivering programs and classes, both in person and virtually, based on community interests and assigned subject areas. Prepare and organize materials needed for programs, including promotional content and supplies. Support program participation, helping patrons with registration and providing assistance during events. Participate in outreach efforts, representing the library at community events and tracking relevant data or statistics as required.

Supervisory Responsibilities: Liaise with the VolunteerLeon program, recruit and onboard volunteers (including training). Manage volunteer schedules, provide ongoing support and supervision, and address concerns. Conduct performance reviews, maintain records, and coordinate appreciation events with the Liaison.

Professional Development & Support: Maintain current awareness of and familiarity with new software programs, electronic resources, computer equipment, and downloadable media Learns about or trains on at least two new applications, devices, programs, or services per year.

DIFFICULTY

Employee must be able to assess and resolve library user and staff problems. Applying the program policies and procedures, whilst also adhering to library policies and procedures requires creativity and critical thinking skills as well as the ability to make sound, reasonable decisions independently.

Employees assigned to this position duties are generally defined and require significant independent judgment in determining work methods for the accomplishment of desired results. Employee must be autonomous.

Contacts are with people inside and outside the organization for the purpose of providing, exchanging, and receiving information.

EQUIPMENT AND TOOLS USED

Personal computer; word processing, spreadsheet, and data base software, SIRSI Library System; adding machine/basic calculator; copier/scanner/printer.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Work is performed in a library and involves desk work, standing and walking or work maybe performed in a book mobile where work involves operating a vehicle, standing, walking, sitting, stooping, reaching, and lifting, and pushing/pulling over 20 pounds.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

Knowledge of customer services practices in a library setting. Ability to train and communicate effectively with others. Knowledge of English grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Knowledge of PC and computer software. Ability to be punctual and dependable.

Minimum Qualifications

Requires graduation from an accredited four year college or university with a Bachelor's degree and two years of related work experience.

Necessary Special Requirements

Possession of a valid Class "E" State of Florida Driver's License with a favorable driving record.

All Leon County employees (regular full-time and part-time, OPS, and PRN) are required to work before, during and after a Declared Local State of Emergency (DLSOE). Participation is considered a condition of employment.

SELECTION GUIDELINES

Formal application, rating of education and experience; oral interview and reference check, and drug testing.

FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt. Work involves handling the Library's Book Hauler where the employee typically performs paraprofessional library activities.
