Library Technician I (20 HR position)
Immediate Supervisor: Library Director
Job Responsibilities: We are looking for a detail-oriented library technician with great people skills, a good memory, and a knack for research. The Library Technician 1 performs a variety of clerical, circulation, and support duties to the Library Director, Library Assistant Director, and any Library Technicians II. This is a position that requires a flexible, community-oriented person and includes repairing damaged books, sending out overdue notices, helping visitors find what they need, and assisting patrons on the computers.
Qualifications:
1. High school diploma or equivalent, previous library or customer service experience
2. Knowledge and understanding of library operations, services, and materials
3. The ability to work independently as well as a team player to maintain and foster cooperative and courteous working relationships with the public, peers, and supervisor
4. Familiar with operating a computer and comfortable instructing on computer usage
5. The ability to follow detailed oral and written instructions and adhere to library and city policies
6. Communicative skills: Effectively communicate ideas and information in both written and verbal form to library staff, library patrons, and community members
Evaluation: The Library Director will evaluate each employee at least once each year
Primary Duties:
1. Receives incoming library materials, empties book drops, and discharges library materials
2. Sorts library materials organize materials on carts to be shelved and shelves materials
3. Shelf reads and straightens materials on the shelves and in the collection while shelving
4. Searches for library items, fulfills holds list, and routes materials to correct locations
5. Performs circulation desk procedures; including patron services, registering patrons, collecting fines, placing material holds and assisting patrons in database searching
6. May serve at circulation desk averaging not more than half of scheduled weekly hours
7. Acts as an attentive backup person to the circulation desk when not scheduled at the desk
8. Answers directional and standard questions and refers specific reference questions to the Library Director or Library Assistant Director as appropriate
9. Assists customers with mechanical operations of library equipment
10. Occasionally assists Librarians with library programs and displays
11. Adheres to policies and procedures established by the City of Harrington and the Delaware Division of Libraries
12. Performs light housekeeping
13. Performs other work as assigned by the Library Director or Library Assistant Director
14. Flexible work hours with regular evening and weekend hours.
Physical stamina is required to rearrange furniture and put away materials, and push and pull loaded book carts and other library equipment and materials. Physical activity includes, but is not limited to, prolonged periods of sitting, as well as periods of standing, mobility, stretching, bending and stooping.
