Liquor & Lottery Cashier

Job Summary
The Liquor & Lottery Cashier is responsible for handling transactions for beer, wine, spirits, and various lottery games. The primary focus is on compliance, ensuring that all sales are legal, while providing fast and friendly service in a high-traffic environment.

Legal Compliance & Safety (Top Priority)

  • Mandatory ID Checks: Verifying the age of every customer purchasing alcohol, tobacco, or lottery products to ensure 100% compliance with state/local laws.
  • Refusal of Service: Identifying signs of intoxication and professionally refusing sales to individuals who are underage or visibly impaired.
  • Surveillance: Monitoring the sales floor and entrance for suspicious activity or potential shoplifting of high-value spirits.

## 2. Lottery Operations

  • Terminal Management: Operating the lottery machine for "Draw" games (e.g., Powerball, Mega Millions) and "Instant" games (scratch-offs).
  • Winning Payouts: Validating winning tickets and paying out prizes accurately according to state limit regulations.
  • Inventory Control: Tracking scratch-off book numbers, activated packs, and ensuring dispensers are fully stocked and organized.
  • Reporting: Printing daily lottery shift reports and reconciling sales against the cash in the drawer.

## 3. Cash & Financial Handling

  • Accurate Transactions: Processing various payment types (cash, credit, debit, EBT where applicable) and maintaining a balanced drawer.
  • Counterfeit Detection: Checking large bills for authenticity using UV lights or counterfeit pens.
  • Drop Procedures: Performing "cash drops" into the safe throughout the shift to keep the amount of money in the register at a safe level.

## 4. Inventory & Merchandising

  • Stocking & Rotating: Filling coolers (the "cold box") and shelves; using the FIFO (First-In, First-Out) method to ensure older stock is sold first.
  • Price Labeling: Updating price tags and ensuring sales signs match the current promotions.
  • Deliveries: Unloading shipments from distributors, checking invoices against received goods, and organizing the stockroom.

## 5. Customer Service & Up-Selling

  • Product Knowledge: Advising customers on wine pairings, spirit types, or explaining how new lottery games work.
  • Up-selling: Suggesting "add-on" items like ice, mixers, or the current high-jackpot lottery tickets.
  • Maintenance: Keeping the checkout area, lottery play-center, and storefront clean and professional.

## Physical & Schedule Requirements

  • Lifting: Ability to lift and carry cases of beer or liquor (typically 30–50 lbs).
