Literacy Coordinator

Michigan City Public Library is seeking a full-time Literacy Coordinator. Duties include, but are not limited to: assessing students, both youth and adult; creating lesson plans; and recruiting and training volunteers. Bachelors degree in Education or related fields preferred. Hourly pay range from $24.24 to $26.78 with excellent benefits.

Literacy Coordinator, Specialist I

GENERAL DUTIES

A Literacy Coordinator improves reading, writing and comprehension skills by implementing evidence-based, data-driven instruction. They assess student progress, create tailored lesson plans and provide targeted intervention to struggling learners, either in small groups or one-on-one, with roles found in both K-12 settings and adult education. Interview and test incoming students for accurate placement. Select materials for literacy, math and English as a Second Language training. Recruit and train volunteer tutors. Match volunteer tutors and students and serve as a resource for tutors. Keep records and statistics, write reports and letters and speak to groups about literacy. Supervises an assistant and reports directly to the Library Director.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND SKILLS

Instruction: Deliver specialized, structured literacy lessons focusing on phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension.

Assessment: Administer diagnostic assessments, monitor student progress and adjust instructional strategies accordingly.

Intervention: Identify and assist students with reading and writing difficulties, providing individualized support.

Planning: Create engaging lesson plans and work with tutors to implement curriculum.

Engagement: Communicate with parents, guardians and stakeholders regarding student progress.

Professional Development: Participate in ongoing training. Select materials for circulation of literacy collection.

Data Analysis: Ability to use student data to drive instructional decisions.

Patience & Communication: Excellent interpersonal skills to work with tutors, volunteers, parents and students who may be frustrated or struggling.

Adaptability: Proficient in modifying lessons to meet diverse learning needs. All other duties as required.

REQUIREMENTS

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Education or a related field.

Experience: Experience in teaching, specialized tutoring or working with diverse learners.

Knowledge: Computer use, Google Documents and Microsoft Office.
