Literacy Teacher

Salary Range: $24–$29 per hour
Other Availability: 5 hours per week; after-hours availability as needed

Position Summary

The Literacy Teacher supports youth and adult participants enrolled in the PACE Program who need additional help to strengthen reading, writing, and foundational academic skills. This role integrates literacy instruction with workforce readiness training to help participants build confidence, improve employability, and prepare for GED testing or career advancement.

The teacher provides individualized and small-group instruction that connects literacy learning to career exploration, skill development, and pathway navigation. Instruction emphasizes practical applications such as resume writing, interview preparation, and workplace communication.

The Literacy Teacher collaborates closely with the Workforce Development Specialist, career coaches, and WFD training staff to ensure participants meet program requirements and progress toward employment and education goals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide reading and writing instruction to adult learners reading below a ninth-grade level.
  • Assess participants’ literacy levels using approved tools and develop personalized learning plans.
  • Teach foundational skills, including:
  • Phonics and decoding
  • Vocabulary building (including irregular and high-frequency words)
  • Reading comprehension
  • Fluency and writing basics
  • Support participants studying for the GED (Reading/Language Arts, Social Studies, Science, and foundational math literacy).
  • Design and lead small-group lessons and one-on-one tutoring sessions.
  • Introduce strategies to help learners understand complex texts and build study skills.
  • Track progress and maintain accurate documentation in accordance with PACE program requirements.
  • Communicate regularly with WFD Specialist and program staff about participant needs and progress.
  • Create a positive, supportive learning environment that is culturally responsive and adult-learner friendly.
  • Refer participants to additional services as needed

Qualifications

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Education, Adult Education, Literacy, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Experience teaching adult learners, out-of-school youth, or workforce development participants.
  • Familiarity with reading assessments and literacy instruction strategies.
  • Experience tutoring or preparing students for the GED is strongly preferred.
  • Ability to create individualized lessons and adjust instruction based on learner needs.
  • Strong communication, patience, and organizational skills.
  • Comfortable working with participants who have barriers to employment or education.

Preferred Skills

  • Knowledge of PACE or similar workforce development programs.
  • Experience teaching learners with low literacy or learning gaps.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) is a plus.
  • Ability to use basic digital learning tools and online GED prep resources.

Work Environment

  • In-person instruction with occasional virtual support, depending on program needs.
  • Small-group classrooms and individual tutoring sessions.
  • Collaboration with WFD Specialist, career coaches, training providers, and WFD program support staff.

Pay: $24.00 - $29.00 per hour
