Literacy Tutor – Middle School (After-School Program)

Bay Area Tutoring Association (BATA) is seeking dedicated Literacy Tutors to support middle school students in reading development through an after-school intervention program. Tutors will provide structured literacy instruction designed to strengthen foundational reading skills, improve comprehension, and build student confidence.

Program Details

Location: August Boeger Middle School
1944 Flint Ave., San Jose, CA
Program Dates: May 2026 only

Schedule

Monday – Thursday: 2:15 PM – 4:15 PM
Friday: 2:15 PM – 3:15 PM (Staff meeting via Zoom)

Program Overview

Tutors will work in small-group settings (approximately 3:1 student-to-tutor ratio) using the Phonics for Reading curriculum and supplemental literacy resources. Instruction focuses on reading fluency, vocabulary development, comprehension skills, and student engagement in a supportive learning environment.

Responsibilities

• Deliver structured literacy instruction using Phonics for Reading and ELA materials
• Support development of reading fluency, vocabulary, and writing skills
• Provide small-group tutoring and targeted academic support
• Collaborate with teachers and site coordinators to align instruction
• Track student attendance and academic progress using reporting tools
• Participate in required training and staff meetings

Qualifications

• Prior tutoring, teaching, or literacy intervention experience preferred
• Strong communication skills and reliability
• Ability to build positive relationships with middle school students
• Passion for supporting student academic growth
• Comfortable working in a structured school-based environment

Requirements

• Completion of required training sessions (dates to be announced)
• BATA onboarding requirements, including:
• Background check
• TB clearance
