Benchmark is responsible for eliminating or reducing damages to underground utilities during any kind of excavation. Through the 811-call center, Benchmark locates underground facilities through established on-call contracts, and is responsible for marking gas, water, sewer, electric and fiber lines.

Benchmark’s contracts typically span several years, so providing the highest-quality work and outstanding customer service is the top priority, after ensuring that all safety measures are taken before, during and after each project. On its largest contract, the firm boasts a 99.99% accuracy ratio. Benchmark provides service to Virginia, D.C., Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Delaware.
Salary Range: $20.00 To $22.00 Hourly
Entry-level no experience starting pay: $20 per hour

What You’ll Do as a Locate Technician
As a Locate Technician, you play a critical role in protecting infrastructure, preventing damage, and keeping communities safe.
- Safely and accurately locate underground utility lines including electric, gas, telecom, fiber, water, and sewer
- Use specialized equipment and technology to mark underground utilities
- Read and interpret maps, blueprints, and job tickets
- Communicate with homeowners, contractors, and crews to ensure safe digging practices
- Plan efficient daily routes across residential, commercial, and rural areas
- Complete required documentation using company systems
- Access utility structures, including lifting and replacing manhole covers
What We’re Looking For
We’re looking for dependable, safety-focused individuals who take pride in their work and enjoy working independently outdoors.
- Willingness to learn — no prior experience required
- Ability to work independently in outdoor environments year-round
- Flexibility to work on-call, including before/after standard business hours
- Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record
- Ability to access restricted or controlled areas (including federal installations)
- Strong communication and customer service skills
- Reliable, self-motivated, and detail-oriented
- Basic computer skills for documentation and communication
Physical & Work Environment Requirements
This is an active, field-based role that requires:
- Ability to lift, push, and pull at least 50 pounds
- Walking up to 5 miles per day across varied terrain (grass, ditches, gravel, wooded areas, construction zones, etc.)
- Working in all weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, snow)
- Frequent bending, kneeling, and working near roadways or active job sites
Additional Requirements
Due to the nature of our work and DOT-related regulations:
- Must pass a pre-employment drug screen
- Must pass a background check
- Must meet Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) requirements
