Mainframe Network Engineer

Job Title: Mainframe Network Engineer (zSystems Network System Programmer)

Role Overview

The zSystems Network System Programmer is responsible for the configuration, administration, performance tuning, and troubleshooting of z/OS Communications Server components including VTAM, TCP/IP, and TN3270. This role ensures secure and reliable mainframe network connectivity, supports enterprise file transfer solutions, and maintains high availability across production environments.

The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in zSeries Communication Services, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to support 24x7 enterprise operations.

Key Responsibilities

z/OS Network Configuration & Support

• Configure, tune, and troubleshoot:
• VTAM
• TCP/IP
• TN3270
• Maintain z/OS Communications Server environments.
• Manage network definitions, routing, and connectivity across LPARs and Sysplex environments.
• Diagnose and resolve connectivity, latency, and session-related issues.

File Transfer & Secure Connectivity

• Install, configure, and support Connect:Direct (NDM).
• Support Connect:Direct File Agent (if applicable).
• Configure and troubleshoot native file transfer protocols:
• FTP
• SFTP
• FTPS (TLS-enabled)
• Ensure secure data transmission using TLS and related encryption standards.
• Support certificate configuration and secure key management as required.

Policy & Security Management

• Configure and maintain Policy Agent.
• Support firewall and IP filtering policies within z/OS.
• Ensure compliance with enterprise security standards.
• Assist with audit and risk mitigation initiatives.

Monitoring & Performance Optimization

• Utilize enterprise monitoring tools such as:
• NetView
• MainView
• Omegamon
• Analyze network performance metrics.
• Identify trends and proactively resolve potential bottlenecks.
• Implement performance tuning improvements.

Automation & Continuous Improvement

• Utilize REXX and/or NetView REXX for network automation (preferred).
• Support automation via SMP/E where applicable.
• Leverage AI tools to analyze network data and recommend improvements.
• Use M365 Copilot AI to summarize meetings and draft communications.
• Stay current on emerging AI capabilities relevant to z Systems and LinuxONE environments.

Operational Support

• Participate in a 24x7 on-call rotation.
• Support weekend maintenance windows and planned change activities.
• Partner with infrastructure, security, and application teams during incident resolution.
• Follow enterprise ITSM processes including Incident and Change Management.

Required Qualifications

• Minimum 10 years of experience configuring and troubleshooting:
• zSeries Communications Server
• VTAM
• TCP/IP
• TN3270
• Strong understanding of z/OS networking architecture.
• Familiarity with network monitoring and troubleshooting tools (NetView, MainView, Omegamon).
• Experience configuring secure file transfer protocols (FTP/SFTP/FTPS with TLS).
• Ability to troubleshoot complex production network issues.
• Experience working in large, enterprise mainframe environments.
• Proven ability to work independently and within cross-functional teams.
• Willingness to participate in on-call rotation.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with Connect:Direct and Connect:Direct File Agent.
• Experience using SMP/E.
• Experience with REXX and NetView REXX scripting.
• Experience supporting LinuxONE networking environments.
• Familiarity with enterprise security frameworks and compliance standards.

Pay: ₹230,722.11 - ₹1,171,794.56 per year
