Job Title: Mainframe Print Engineer – z Systems (Print Services)
Role Summary
The Mainframe Print Engineer is responsible for the design, implementation, and ongoing support of z/OS print services across enterprise environments. This role focuses on JES2/JES3 print routing, IBM print subsystems (Infoprint Server, PSF), automation via REXX scripting, and ensuring reliable print delivery for business-critical applications. The ideal candidate will have deep z/OS systems programming expertise, strong automation experience, and the ability to leverage AI tools to enhance operational efficiency and performance optimization.
Primary Responsibilities
Print Services Architecture & Support
- Design, implement, and maintain JES2/JES3 print routing and output management configurations.
- Support and enhance IBM print subsystems including Infoprint Server and PSF.
- Manage print routing across multiple LPARs and remote print destinations.
- Ensure high availability and reliability of enterprise print services.
Automation & Optimization
- Develop and maintain REXX scripts to automate print operations and reduce manual effort.
- Implement monitoring and alerting for print queues, spool utilization, and device availability.
- Utilize NetView/SA and OPSMVS for event handling and automation.
- Analyze spool usage trends and optimize print performance.
Troubleshooting & Incident Management
- Diagnose and resolve print-related issues across LPAR environments.
- Collaborate with operations teams to ensure timely resolution of production incidents.
- Participate in on-call rotation for print-related escalations.
- Integrate print services with ServiceNow or similar ITSM platforms for incident tracking.
Security & Compliance
- Implement and maintain RACF security configurations for print services and device access.
- Ensure compliance with enterprise security policies.
- Support audit requirements and access controls.
Disaster Recovery & Business Continuity
- Participate in disaster recovery planning and testing for print services.
- Validate print routing and spool configurations in DR environments.
- Document recovery procedures and operational guidelines.
AI & Continuous Improvement
- Leverage AI tools to analyze print performance metrics and recommend optimizations.
- Use M365 Copilot AI to summarize meetings, document technical findings, and draft communications.
- Explore AI-based automation opportunities within mainframe environments.
- Demonstrate commitment to continuous learning in AI applications for z/OS systems.
Required Experience
- 10+ years of experience in z/OS systems programming with emphasis on JES2/JES3 and print subsystems.
- 8+ years of experience with Infoprint Server, PSF, and related IBM print technologies.
- 10+ years of experience writing and maintaining REXX automation scripts.
- Strong proficiency in SDSF, ISPF, and TSO for managing print queues and system resources.
- Experience with NetView/SA and OPSMVS for automation and event management.
- Familiarity with RACF security related to print services.
- Experience integrating print services with ITSM platforms (e.g., ServiceNow).
- Ability to apply AI tools for operational analytics and performance improvement.
- Proficiency with M365 Copilot AI for documentation and communication support.
