Position Summary
The Maintenance / Property Manager is responsible for the care, safety, and stewardship of the buildings and grounds of the Heart of Jesus Retreat Center in Santa Ana. This role supports the spiritual mission of the retreat center by maintaining a peaceful, orderly, and welcoming environment conducive to prayer, community life, ministry, and hospitality.
This full-time position requires senior level experience in building maintenance, property management or work in a related field and a working knowledge of basic plumbing, electrical and mechanical systems. Experience working with a religious congregation, nonprofit or community organization a plus.

Essential Responsibilities
Facility Maintenance & Stewardship
- Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs, including basic plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, and mechanical tasks
- Conduct regular inspections of buildings and systems to ensure safety, cleanliness, and proper functioning
- Respond promptly and appropriately to maintenance requests and urgent repair needs at the retreat center and both convents
- Maintain cleanliness and good order in the retreat center buildings
Grounds & Exterior Care
- Oversee upkeep of grounds, walkways, parking areas, and outdoor spaces
- Coordinate landscaping, irrigation, seasonal maintenance, and waste removal
- Ensure property readiness for seasonal weather and special events
Vendor & Contractor Coordination
- Coordinate and oversee outside contractors and service providers
- Obtain quotes, schedule services, and ensure work is completed properly and respectfully
- Monitor service agreements (HVAC, fire safety, security, pest control, etc.)
Safety, Compliance & Risk Awareness
- Support compliance with safety standards, fire codes, and accessibility requirements
- Maintain emergency equipment and systems (fire extinguishers, alarms, emergency lighting)
- Identify and report potential hazards or concerns promptly to retreat center director or convent superior
Community & Event Support
- Prepare and reset spaces for retreats and events as needed
- Work discreetly and respectfully during retreat days, prayer times and community activities
Administrative & Planning Support
- Maintain basic records of maintenance work, inspections, and supply inventories
- Assist retreat team and convent superiors with preventative maintenance planning and budgeting
- Recommend improvements that enhance safety, sustainability, and long-term stewardship
Essential Qualifications
- Experience in building maintenance, property management, or a related field
- Working knowledge of basic plumbing, electrical, and mechanical systems
- Ability to work independently, manage priorities, and follow through on tasks
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
- Good communication skills and a respectful, service-oriented demeanor
- Ability to perform physical tasks, including lifting and outdoor work
- Valid CA driver’s license and current vehicle registration and insurance
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with a religious congregation, nonprofit, or community organization
- Familiarity with older or historic buildings
- Basic computer skills for scheduling, email, and record keeping

Work Environment & Schedule

- Flexible schedule, with occasional evenings or weekends for services or events

Compensation
- This position offers $36.00 to $38.00 per hour depending on experience
