Maintenance Technician

The Property:

Position Summary:

The Historic Elgin Hotel is seeking a part-time Maintenance Technician to support the ongoing care, preservation, safety, and functionality of the property. This role can be entry level or a seasoned professional and is responsible for performing routine maintenance and minor repairs to ensure a seamless guest experience and to protect the integrity of our historic building.

The Maintenance Technician will work under the direction of Tammy Ensey, the owner, and Andre Ebaben, Facilities Director, and must demonstrate reliability, strong problem-solving ability, attention to detail, and pride in workmanship. The candidate must be organized, adaptable, and capable of managing a variety of maintenance tasks while maintaining a professional and respectful presence within a boutique hospitality environment.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Respond promptly to maintenance requests from management and staff
  • Perform routine maintenance activities including, but not limited to, plumbing fixture repair, maintenance of cleaning equipment, door repair, lightbulb replacement, HVAC filter replacement, and maintenance on specialty features such as fireplaces and Jacuzzi tubs
  • Troubleshoot and repair minor plumbing leaks, electrical issues, lighting, hardware, and general wear and tear
  • Perform light carpentry, painting, caulking, and general upkeep tasks
  • Assist with general upkeep including picking up trash, power washing sidewalks, fences, and patios, cleaning building exterior and windows, pulling and spraying weeds, trimming bushes, mulching flower beds, and various landscape projects.
  • Assist in maintaining historic windows, doors, trim, and architectural features with appropriate care
  • Remove snow from sidewalks and parking areas and spread ice melt as needed
  • Support events by moving heavy furniture and setting up and removing chairs, tables and equipment as needed
  • Maintain records of maintenance tasks in Trello
  • Other duties may arise from time to time and may be assigned

Physical/Mental Demands:

  • Able to lift up to 80 pounds.
  • Able to climb 8 ft and 32 ft extension ladders and perform duties such as painting and changing lightbulbs
  • Able to access mechanical areas as necessary
  • Able to stand, bend, kneel, and work in confined spaces when required
  • Strong troubleshooting and critical thinking ability
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Calm and effective decision-making under pressure
  • Ability to respond to emergency situations when necessary

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Prior maintenance experience preferred (hospitality or historic property experience a plus)
  • Working knowledge of plumbing, electrical, and general building systems
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Prior painting experience
  • Dependable and self-motivated
  • Good communication skills
  • Ability to follow direction and safety guidelines

Classification: Non-Exempt

Salary: $13 - $18/hour based on experience

Schedule: Part-Time, approximately 8-12 hours per week. Days and hours to be determined.
