Summary/Objective

The primary duties of the Maintenance Worker I are to provide repairs and maintenance. This position also assists Operators and Mechanics in any maintenance work as required by the department.

Essential Functions

Repairs, maintains, and cleans City-owned facilities.

  • Uses and maintains hand tools such as pliers, screwdrivers, pipe wrenches, crescent wrenches, power tools, saws and socket wrenches, to make necessary repairs.
  • Reads and understands manuals, drawings, schematics and other maintenance related materials.
  • Follows established safety practices for the benefit of self, coworkers, and the general public such as the use personal protective equipment/gear required in hazardous environments and emergency situations.
  • Maintains a cordial and effective working relationship with contractors, plumbers, service technicians, and coworkers.
  • Communicates orally and in writing, including using telephone and two-way radio.

Operates equipment to maintain the internal and external appearance of City facilities.

  • Assists in the proactive maintenance and ensures the mechanical integrity of City equipment through observation of and follow up on unusual noise or heat from running equipment, motors or pumps.
  • Assists with the maintenance and repair of machinery and equipment such as lawnmowers, weed eaters, fire equipment, and pay stations (exact equipment changes based on department assigned) to include checking for proper oil levels, changing oil as needed and reporting all suspicious issues that may need maintenance performed.
  • Operates mowers, tractors, and weed eaters to maintain the appearance of the instructed areas.

Performs and records seasonal, plumbing, electrical, and carpentry duties as needed.

  • Organizes and maintains records of all repair and maintenance activities and completes daily work orders, in electronic and hard copy format.
  • Participates in monthly or emergency on-call as required and other emergencies and provides troubleshooting, maintenance, and emergency repairs due to weather events or equivalent situations to get operations back online as soon as possible.
  • Assists supervisors and other departmental personnel in other projects.
  • Attends monthly safety meetings and other required training.
  • Works independently and meet deadlines.
Requirements:

Required Education and Experience

  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Valid driver's license.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Two (2) years’ experience in maintenance of facilities and mechanical equipment.
