Maintenance Worker II (Utilities)

Description

Performs a wide range of manual labor and maintenance tasks to support overall Public Works operations. While this position may be primarily assigned to the Utilities division, it requires versatility to assist across multiple service areas as needed, along with the safe operation of light maintenance equipment and occasional use of heavy equipment.

Starting hourly rate is expected to be within the range of $31.12 - $33.01/hour for external candidates.

Examples of Duties

The essential functions of the Maintenance Worker II position are listed below; however, this recruitment will primarily focus on utility-related duties and operations.

Streets


  • Assist in patching of streets
  • Assist in striping and sign installation
  • Daily trash pickup
  • Inspect trees and assist in the removal of trees in public areas
  • Assist in the checking storm sewers and repair of catch basins.
  • Assist in repairing and raising manholes
  • Operate and maintain equipment involved in street works maintenance, snow and ice removal, repair and construction activities including, but not limited to; one-ton dump trucks, pickups, tar kettle, roller, mowers, skid loaders, small front-end loaders (under 30 hp), chain saw, electric motors, pumps, miscellaneous hand and power tools, carpentry, painting, plumbing and cement finishing work; tamper, compressors, sanders, generators, shovels, wrenches, detection devices, mobile radio and phone.
  • Occasional operation of equipment such as dump truck, loader, plow truck, grader, backhoe, bucket truck or similar equipment.
Parks
  • Plow and remove snow from ice rinks, sidewalks, trails, parking lots and other areas of parks and city property.
  • Flood and sweep ice rinks.
  • Seed, fertilize and care for vegetation in parks and open spaces.
  • Mow and trim grass; prune and remove trees, shrubs and other vegetation in and around parks boulevards and open spaces.
  • Assist in landscaping, maintenance, and construction of athletic fields and public facilities
  • Daily trash pickup
  • Operate light equipment including lawn and landscaping equipment, aerators, edgers, riding mowers, weed trimmers, one-ton dump trucks, pickups, power hand tools, sprinklers, irrigation systems, rollers, push mowers, skid loaders, small front-end loaders and similar equipment.
Utility
  • Assist in jetting sewer duties to maintain and clean wastewater collection lines
  • Assist in the checking of sanitary sewers
  • Assist in repairing and raising manholes
  • Assist in maintenance of lift stations
  • Assist with watermain repairs, well house maintenance, hydrant flushing, gate valve exercising, meter reading and installation
  • Assist with locating utility distribution piping, valves, hydrant, curb stops and manholes
  • May occasionally operate trucks and power-operated equipment such as jet vactor, electric motors, pumps, miscellaneous hand and power tools, carpentry, painting, plumbing and cement finishing work; tamper, compressors, generators, shovels, wrenches, detection devices, televising equipment, mobile radio and phone
  • On- call rotation carry cell phone after hours for emergence response is required
Overall
  • Perform semi-skilled work in all areas of public works under direct supervision.
  • Assist in routine and strenuous manual labor including lifting and digging.
  • Assist in the servicing and maintaining of a variety of tools and equipment.
  • Under supervision, operate in a safe and efficient manner light equipment engaged in public works (parks, streets and utility maintenance).
  • Performs other work as assigned or apparent.
  • Must be able to work weekends and respond to emergencies on nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must be willing to work in adverse weather conditions.

Typical Qualifications

Education


  • Highschool Diploma or GED Certificate.
  • Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) preferred, but not required.
Experience
  • Three (3) years of experience in park maintenance, street maintenance, utilities maintenance, or related field.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills
  • Knowledgeable in all areas of the described "Essential Functions".
  • Knowledge of the operating characteristics of assigned equipment.
  • Ability to read and understand written and oral directions, safety rules, operating manuals, material safety data sheets, etc.
  • Knowledge of applicable traffic laws, ordinance and regulations involved in the operation of assigned equipment.
  • Knowledge of maintenance requirements of assigned equipment.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to make minor operating adjustments and to recognize operating deficiencies in assigned equipment.
  • Ability to perform strenuous work under varying conditions.

Special Requirements
Class B CDL within two years of being hired.

Utilities Only: Ability to obtain a Class “D” Water Operators License as determined by the rules and regulations of the Minnesota Department of Health within two (2) years of being hired.

Utilities Only: Ability to obtain a Class “S-D” Sewer Collection System Operators License as determined by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency within two years of being hired.

Subject to the Federal Motor Carrier Administration’s (FMCSA) Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations.
