General Statement of Duties

Performs unskilled work in the general landscape, parks, beach access areas and street and right-of-way maintenance.

Distinguishing Features of the Class

Employees in this class perform manual labor involving the maintenance of beaches, beach access areas, park grounds and facilities, street and right of way maintenance and related tasks. Employees work in teams or alone in landscape maintenance activities. Employees are subject to the hazards including working in outside environments, in extremes of hot and cold weather, and exposure to noise, vibration, moving mechanical parts, atmospheric conditions, oils, and skin irritants. Work around raw sewage is also subject to the final standards of OSHA on blood borne pathogens. Work is performed under regular supervision and work is evaluated by observation to determine the effectiveness of duties.

Recruitment and Selection Guidelines

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the maintenance and repair of landscaping, drainage ditches, and right of way as well as other maintenance related tasks.
  • Ability to work as a team member in conducting and ensuring completion of all tasks.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions of assigned tasks. Working knowledge of the laws, regulations, policies, and procedures related to building and grounds maintenance.
  • Skill in the operation of light-to-medium equipment.
  • Ability to perform manual labor in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Operates trimmers, gator, front-end loaders, chain saws, dump trucks, and related light-to-medium equipment and vehicles.
  • Maintains good relationships with the public through courtesy and respect for individual property.
  • Ability to keep accurate records.

Physical Requirements

Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. Must be able to perform heavy work exerting up to one hundred pounds of force occasionally; fifty pounds of force frequently; and twenty pounds of force constantly. Must be able to accurately measure and calculate quantities. Must possess visual acuity to operate equipment and distinguish safety hazards of the work which may affect self and others. Must be able to accurately measure and calculate quantities.

Desirable Education and Experience

Graduation from high school and some related experience in landscape maintenance: or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Requirements

Possession of a valid NC driver's license.
