GENERAL PURPOSE

Under general guidance and direction operates heavy equipment used for the repair and maintenance of flood control facilities. Operates a variety of motorized light and heavy equipment, light machines and power tools used in construction, maintenance, or similar work. Performs related duties as required. Works closely with the other members of the maintenance crew to ensure AMAFCA facilities are in safe working condition.

Works under general guidance and direction of the Maintenance Superintendent.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

May be assigned to lead or oversee the daily work of others. May serve as acting superintendent in the superintendent's absence.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The following statements are intended to describe the essential functions and responsibilities of this position. They should not be viewed as an exhaustive list of the specific duties, responsibilities, and prerequisites.

1. Operates backhoe, loader, compact loader, crawler tractor, scraper, excavator, grader, and other heavy equipment as required. Transports oversized equipment from one job site to another.

2. Operates concrete saw, compressor, and jackhammer in concrete removals. Sandblasts and drills holes in concrete. Ties rebar with wire. Operates air screed, pours, and finishes concrete. Seals and repairs joints in concrete. Manually loads concrete rubble into loader bucket or dump truck for disposal.

3. Performs routine and preventative maintenance such as general equipment cleaning, checking fluid levels, lubrication, maintaining tires pressures, and changing implements or attachments. Performs minor repair on heavy equipment.

4. Drives fence posts with manual and mechanical driver and builds wire fences.

5. Installs guardrail.

6. Occasionally welds, fabricates and installs railing, fence posts, gates, and other projects.

7. Hand places rock in riprap blankets and inside gabion baskets. Laces baskets shut with wire.

8. Burn weeds with propane torch.

9. Manually picks up trash and debris and loads into dump trucks.

10. Operates wheeled or tracked equipment on steep concrete arroyo side slopes or on earthen dam embankments.

11. Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience Required

1. High School Diploma or GED.

2. A combination of five (5) years of experience driving heavy equipment, driving in the transportation field, or driving in the construction field with some experience in the construction industry.

3. Experience operating diesel-powered construction equipment, to include backhoe, loader, compact loader, crawler tractor, scraper, excavator, grader and other heavy equipment and ability to operate wheeled or tacked equipment at an incline.

Education and Experience Preferred

1. Hazmat Endorsement

Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

1. Ability to communicate in verbal and written format, including but not limited to, following oral instructions and preparing written reports.

2. Knowledge of heavy equipment used in excavation, backfilling, and loading operations and their capacities and physical limitations.

3. Knowledge in using cell phones, tablets and computers.

4. Skilled at following safe practices.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Must pass a pre-employment medical examination, drug screening, and background, driving, and criminal records check.

2. Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with a Tanker endorsement. The license must be unrestricted, except for corrective lenses (Restriction B).

3. Subject to all applicable Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations under 49 CFR Parts 40 and 382, including participation in random drug and alcohol testing.

4. May be required to respond to emergency call-outs.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: From $27.55 per hour
