About GMHC

GMHC is the world's first HIV/AIDS service organization. For over 40 years, we've provided support, advocacy, and education to communities affected by HIV/AIDS — from housing and nutrition assistance to mental health services, legal support, and healthcare navigation. We're looking for a writer to join our Communications team and help tell the stories that matter.

About the Role

You'll lead content across channels — newsletters, blogs, fundraising appeals, press materials, and website copy. This is a hands-on writing job, not a strategy-only role. You'll own the editorial calendar, write high-visibility content, and help bring our direct response fundraising work in-house.

A major priority: leading content for our upcoming website redesign, including auditing what exists, writing new copy, and shepherding it through approvals. You'll also play a key role in an organizational rebrand launching in 2025.

This role reports to the VP of Communications & Brand and partners closely with our Digital & Social, Creative Strategy, and Development teams. You'll work across the organization — with program staff, fundraisers, and leadership — to uncover stories and transform them into content that resonates with donors, supporters, and the communities we serve.

What You'll Work On

Monthly newsletters and weekly content production across web and email

Direct response fundraising copy for mail and digital campaigns

Press releases, media pitches, and talking points

Donor communications, appeals, and stewardship content

Website copy for our redesign — from core pages to program descriptions

Thought leadership, executive communications, and LinkedIn drafts for leadership

Campaign narratives for major fundraising initiatives, including AIDS Walk New York

What We're Looking For

  • 6-8 years of writing and editing experience, ideally in nonprofit, public health, or advocacy settings
  • A portfolio that shows range — web, email, fundraising, editorial
  • Direct response experience (this matters — you should know what works in an appeal)
  • Experience leading content for a website redesign or major web refresh
  • A clear, jargon-free writing style that centers the reader
  • Strong editorial judgment and comfort giving and receiving feedback
  • Ability to interview staff, clients, and partners and turn conversations into stories
  • Comfort managing approvals and working across departments
  • Commitment to inclusive, stigma-free, and people-first communication

Nice to Have

  • Familiarity with WordPress and Asana
  • Basic SEO and web writing best practices
  • Experience in LGBTQIA+ or public health communications

Work Environment

  • Hybrid role with regular on-site presence in New York
  • Flexibility to work non-traditional hours during campaigns or events
  • Participation in AIDS Walk New York is expected for all staff

Why GMHC

This is a chance to do meaningful work at an organization with 40+ years of history and deep roots in the communities we serve. You'll have ownership over content strategy and execution, a seat at the table during a major rebrand, and the opportunity to shape how GMHC shows up across every channel.

GMHC is committed to building a diverse team. We strongly encourage applications from LGBTQIA+ individuals, people of color, and people living with HIV/AIDS.
