About the Opportunity
Manager Development builds and leads a high performing two teams that delivers great software to our customers with performance, reliability and scalability top of mind. They guide development of code review standards and ensure they are known and enforced across the team. This role reports to the Director of AI and Machine Learning.
Promoting a culture of extreme ownership, collaboration, and effective communication to maximize productivity and employee engagement; evangelizing good design and practices to the team; offering the team support in technical decision making, especially when there is impact on other teams or the company at large; managing evolution of the architecture to better support future requirements based on product direction; providing leadership, coaching and
career development to the individual contributors/technical professionals; managing the team to deliver software on-time; oversees the day-to-day tasks of the team to make accurate estimates and deliver on those estimates; removing technical impediments from the team; encouraging best practices.
In this leadership role, the Manager Development is expected to provide code and architecture reviews of proposed solutions and direct the activities of the leads on the engineering teams, providing guidance and expertise. It is expected that the Manager will apply some of their previous development/engineering skills to model and investigate new approaches and solutions to new problems, while ensuring the overall teams are applying start-of-the-art practices and thinking.
The role will also require a leader that is adept in working with dependencies within other technical areas including Platform & Mobile development, Design (design patterns UI/UX), Cloud services (use of Kafka and other services) as well as product readiness. This role requires focus and precision on the development of a scalable architecture that can support thousands of clients and millions of employees, while establishing a strong vision of how the products will be used and consumed in the marketplace. In addition, the Manager works closely with support, after product delivery, to ensure that the products developed are successful with our internal and external customers.
What you’ll get to do
  • Develop and establish the architecture and product approach to support intelligent search and natural language functions.
  • Manage a high performing group of data engineers and product managers in the delivery of the various solutions as well as providing initial Devops support for the tools, platforms and services being deployed.
  • Develop architectures that supports future growth and extension of services while evaluating key architectural components for Azure and other third party providers to ensure a secure and stable environment. Work closely with the Enterprise Architecture Group (EAG) to ensure architectural designs are supported by EAG.
  • Develop, coach and mentor team members to achieve the core goals of the organization and groom the next set of leaders in the organization including performance reviews, salary administration, and career development.
  • Actively work with the various teams to ensure that the planning and execution meet the established timelines needed for successful implementations.
  • Develop the needed education paths to build the overall expertise of the team in the execution of data solutions with Azure Kubernetes

Measurement & Success
  • Create and own the accountability for the overall search and information architecture, playing a major role in the support of these areas. This includes architecture development, refinement, and presentment to other groups.
  • Build a scalable data environment that can support the growing needs of 7,000+ customers while delivering strong levels of responsiveness in natural language processing.
  • Develop a multi-disciplined team that are experts in developing scalable solutions and are leading thinkers in the use of new solutions, services, and technologies. A team that has built expertise to minimize spikes during the development of new products by being forward looking and educated.
  • Ensuring that the overall design is resilient, meeting customer expected uptime and establish performance criteria.
  • Plan and execute the search and natural language products delivering them in a timely and on budget.
  • Supporting the delivery of the overall department metrics for quality, roadmap delivery success and employee net promoter scores.
Skills and experience we value
  • 5-8 years of progressive software product development in a dev leadership role or related experience.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to build effective networks and leverage them appropriately.
  • Demonstrable career progression from hands-on technologist to leader.
  • Experienced in recruiting, building and managing high performing teams.
  • Experience with agile/scrum principles and development methodologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate people and activities across multiple functional areas
  • Actively coach and mentor members of the team.
  • Must be team player and able to thrive within a large global organization.
  • Solid business acumen, management and communication skills.
  • Strategic thinker, able to bring innovative solutions to critical business problems.
  • Forward thinking: Continually striving to improve the tools, technologies and approaches we use.
What would make you really stand out
  • Post-secondary degree in a related field with a Masters in math or other related disciplines preferred
  • Proven track record of building cloud-based, enterprise products
  • Have a passion for automation and continuous improvement.
  • Have a passion for technology and software engineering, keen to stay abreast of emerging technologies, languages and practices.
  • Must be an effective communicator, able to converse with teams of differing experience and cultures
