Lead the Future of Health Information Management

Pagosa Springs Medical Center (PSMC) is seeking an experienced and forward-thinking Manager of Health Information Management (HIM) to lead our HIM Department. This leadership position is responsible for the integrity, security, accuracy, accessibility, and compliance of patient health information while overseeing coding, release of information, data quality initiatives, regulatory compliance, and departmental operations.

This role offers the opportunity to work closely with Revenue Cycle, Informatics, Compliance, Quality, Clinical Leadership, and Providers to ensure the highest standards of documentation, coding accuracy, and health information governance throughout the organization.

Important Position Requirement

This is an on-site leadership position located in Pagosa Springs, Colorado.

The Manager of HIM is expected to maintain a visible leadership presence, collaborate directly with clinical and operational departments, participate in hospital committees, oversee department staff, and support ongoing organizational initiatives. Candidates must be willing to work on-site at Pagosa Springs Medical Center.

Position Summary

The Manager of HIM is responsible for the management and daily operations of the Health Information Management Department, including:

  • Acquisition, analysis, maintenance, and protection of patient medical records
  • Health information privacy and security
  • Medical coding oversight and compliance
  • Release of Information (ROI)
  • Data integrity and quality control
  • Regulatory readiness and accreditation compliance
  • HIM staff leadership and development
  • Strategic planning and department growth
  • Electronic health record optimization
  • Understanding and application of reimbursement methodologies

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Department Management

  • Direct and oversee daily HIM operations
  • Lead, mentor, coach, and develop HIM staff
  • Conduct performance evaluations and performance improvement planning
  • Coordinate recruiting, interviewing, onboarding, and retention efforts
  • Facilitate department meetings and staff communication
  • Promote a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement

Health Information Management

  • Ensure completeness, accuracy, and integrity of patient medical records
  • Oversee coding quality and compliance with ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS guidelines
  • Manage release of information processes
  • Monitor documentation quality initiatives
  • Address medical record amendments and patient information disputes
  • Maintain compliance with HIPAA and applicable privacy laws
  • Develop and maintain HIM policies and procedures

Regulatory Compliance & Quality

  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and accreditation requirements
  • Maintain survey readiness
  • Monitor data security and privacy practices
  • Investigate and respond to quality and compliance concerns
  • Participate in Performance Improvement, Documentation Improvement, Medical Records, and EHR-related committees

Strategic Planning & Technology

  • Collaborate with Informatics and IT on EHR optimization initiatives
  • Support implementation of new technologies and workflows
  • Develop short- and long-term departmental goals
  • Monitor departmental KPIs and performance metrics
  • Prepare statistical and operational reports for leadership review

Financial & Operational Management

  • Develop and manage departmental budgets
  • Monitor staffing, payroll, and productivity
  • Forecast capital and technology needs
  • Participate in contract negotiations and vendor management
  • Support grant-related activities as needed

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Health Information Management or a related field required

Experience

  • Minimum two (2) years of experience in a healthcare-related field
  • Minimum two (2) years of supervisory or management experience in an electronic health record environment
  • Medical coding experience strongly preferred
  • Experience within a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) environment preferred but not required

Knowledge & Expertise

Candidates should possess:

  • Strong knowledge of healthcare regulations and compliance requirements
  • Understanding of reimbursement methodologies
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and disease processes
  • Expertise in ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS coding guidelines
  • Understanding of privacy, security, and confidentiality requirements in healthcare

Required Certifications

  • RHIA (Registered Health Information Administrator) or RHIT (Registered Health Information Technician)
  • National Coding Certification through the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) or American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) required, or must be obtained within six (6) months of employment
  • Current AHA BLS (Heart Saver) certification

Technical Skills

  • Microsoft Office Suite
  • Advanced Excel and data analysis capabilities preferred
  • Electronic Health Record systems
  • Reporting and data management software
  • Strong computer and project management skills

Compensation & Benefits

  • Base Compensation Range: $59,800.00 - $92,456.00 annual, based on 0-22 years of relevant experience. "Relevant experience" means relevant to the employee's responsibilities set forth in the job description as determined by the HR Manager, CAO, applicable department manager/director and applicable senior leader.
  • Starting Work Bonus: This position is eligible for a starting work bonus of up to $5,000. Eligibility, amount, and payment terms are subject to Pagosa Springs Medical Center’s compensation policies and may vary based on position, experience, and employment status. Bonus payments, if applicable, are typically issued after the employee has met required employment and service criteria.
  • Moving Expense Reimbursement: This position is eligible for a moving expense reimbursement of up to $3,000. Reimbursement is subject to Pagosa Springs Medical Center’s relocation policy and requires prior approval. Eligible expenses and reimbursement amounts may vary based on position and individual circumstances. Reimbursement is processed in accordance with established policy and applicable tax regulations.
  • Benefits: Benefits include generous paid time off, separate sick leave, health, dental, vision, life and AD&D insurance, long-term disability and option for short-term disability, and retirement plan with employer contribution.
  • Job Type: Full-time
